According to the most recent research from Hattie Educational research, self-reported scores have the second highest effect on improving student achievement.
I believe that students' art grades should be about what they know and are able to do according to the CCSD curriculum content and the Wyoming Fine and Performing Art Standards. Nearly all students' grades are self-reported with the use of a self-assessment form that allows students to show and explain how they used or created the art elements that we are focusing on in their artwork at the completion of a project. For most projects, I have developed a proficiency scale to help students understand what the scores(1,2,3,4) they select mean and help them accurately assess their work on their own with the aid of example images. The self-assessment process provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their work, understanding of the art vocabulary we focused on in the lesson, and indicate their own assessed grade. I review this form with the student artwork to check for the elements of the assignment and enter to summative score into the grade book. If I am not in agreement with a student's self-assessed score I like to leave a note or conference with the student about the missing element(s).
