NYSITELL

New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners

The purpose of the NYSITELL is to assess the English language proficiency level of new entrants whose primary language is a language other than English as indicated on their Home Language Questionnaire. http://www.nysed.gov/bilingual-ed/ell-identification-placementhome-language-questionnaire

This test is administered only to students who are new to the country or school district.

It is used to determine if a student qualifies for ENL services.



NYSESLAT

New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test

This test is given only once a year in the spring.

It assesses a student’s English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading & writing.

The results of this test determine how much English language support the student needs.

When a student attains the proficiency level of commanding, up to two years of continued support services are offered.
