Clarkstown High School North Health Education Program Syllabus



Course Description:

The Health Education course is designed to enhance the knowledge and participation of healthy lifestyle choices. The units of instruction that will be addressed are geared to help students make healthy and safe choices for their overall health, while also advocating wellness to others. Students will gain knowledge and skills regarding Emotional, Social, Mental, and Physical Health.

National Health Education Standards:

Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.

Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.

Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.

Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.

Standard 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.

Standard 6: Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.

Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.

Standard 8: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.

Course Topics:

Fitness and Nutrition, Mental and Emotional Health, Stress and Anxiety, Unintentional Injury Prevention, Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs, Violence Prevention, Sexual Risks-HIV/AIDS, Family Life/Sexual Health, Health Advocacy.

Course Expectations and Policies:

Our classroom is a place of learning. Students are expected to arrive on time, with their class materials. The environment promotes positive interactions and class discussions; therefore, profanity, insults and negative comments are not tolerated. Students are required to complete homework assignments, projects, and class work on time. There are no cell phone devices allowed to be out in our classroom. Students are expected to put their cell phones away for the entire class period. If a cell phone is used, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.

Course Material:

Students are required to come to every class with a 3 subject notebook OR 3 ring binder, folder, agenda book, and pen or pencil.

Course Assessments:

Students will be graded based on participation, homework assignments, class work, quizzes, unit tests, and a final Health Advocacy project.

Final Assessment:

Students will be given a Health Advocacy Project for their Health final. Multiple parts of the project will be distributed and completed throughout the school year. At the end of the 4th quarter, students will then present their project. Due dates and rubrics will be given for each part.

B. Persuasive Speech Essay: Students will analyze data to determine priority areas in need of advocacy. Students will identify agencies, organizations, and others who advocate for their health issue. Students will define personal beliefs regarding the health advocacy issue and takes a clear health-enhancing stance regarding their advocacy issue.

C. Program Outline: Students will identify their audience and adapt the health message and

communication technique to the characteristics of the individual or group.

D. Peer Assessment: Students will work with one another to critique their project and participation.

E. Presentation: Students will create communication techniques (i.e. verbal presentation, visual aids, etc.) to persuade the individual or group to support or act on the health-enhancing issue.

Attendance and Participation:

Students must arrive to class on time. Students who arrive late and do not have a pass, will be marked as an unexcused lateness. If it is a continuing problem, parents and administrators will be notified and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. Students who miss class are responsible for meeting with me to gather any missed work and materials. There will be many classroom activities and discussions. Students are expected to participate within the class period, as it will be a part of their grade.
