RULER is a systemic approach to SEL developed at the Center for Emotional Intelligence. RULER aims to infuse the principles of emotional intelligence into the immune system of preK to 12 schools, informing how leaders lead, teachers teach, students learn, and families support students.
RULER is an acronym for the five skills of emotional intelligence.

Every morning when the children arrive in their classroom they "check in" on the Mood Meter. This enables the classroom teacher to determine how his/her class is feeling overall. During the morning meeting the class decides as a whole how they feel. They pick the appropriate word/picture and post it on the giant Mood Meter painted by the front door.
"I messages" help us to express our needs, feelings and problems in a respectful way that does not attack others. "I messages" are a healthy way of telling others how we feel.
When we want to share how we feel, we use an "I feel" message.
I feel__________when_________________.
ex. I feel happy when it's my birthday.
I feel sad when people call me names.
