Our Classroom Rules and Procedures
Expectations
Our school believes in a positive reinforcement approach with building and classroom rules and procedures. All of our rules and procedures follow this belief and align under our school’s main expectations:
B Be Ready
A Act Responsibly
R Respect Yourself and Others
K Keep it safe
Sixth grade uses Remind to distribute information to parents and guardians. Parents are encouraged to sign into Remind in an effort to stay updated about what’s happening in sixth grade.
Consequences
We encourage appropriate behavior with School-Wide Positive Behavior Supports (SWPBS) and we discourage inappropriate behavior in our school and classrooms. The following guidelines will be followed for discouraging inappropriate behaviors (see Homestead Elementary 6th Grade Policies and Procedures).
Homework
All homework has a purpose and is related to what we are working on in class. It is simply a quick review of the concepts we are learning. The assignments will be twofold; a Daily Language Review (DLR) that is to be completed each night Monday-Thursday in preparation for a formative assessment Friday each week. The DLR will be worth 25 points a day, including Friday's assessment; however, I do not take a grade every single week, but I do keep up with students completion of work. Students who complete 10 days in a row will receive a homework pass. Altogether students will have an opportunity to receive a grade of 100 with the language review. This is a simple (easy) grade that is beneficial to students if they put in the time. Students are also expected to read 20 minutes per night Monday-Thursday and complete one part of the Daily Reading Log. Practice reading daily is the best way to become a better reader and all students are expected to read for the allotted 20 minutes. That time reading can be spent on ANY kind of reading (fiction, non-fiction, books, newspapers, online articles, etc.) Homework is an extension of the classroom; it helps provide needed practice while developing responsibility and maturity. Homework assignments have the following purposes:
To extend the work introduced in the classroom and to encourage good habits by stimulating voluntary effort, initiative, independence, responsibility, and self-direction;
To provide opportunities for creative ability;
To reinforce school learning with additional practice, integration, and application;
To increase a student's skills and knowledge;
To encourage a carry-over of worthwhile school activities into permanent leisure interests;
To incorporate resources of the home and family;
To improve home-school relationships; and
To challenge every pupil.
Make up work:
Make immediate plans to do all make-up work due to an excused absence (HES Handbook). Normally, all make-up work must be made up in a period of no less than three days no greater than the number of days missed, if more than three (HES Handbook).
Grades: Please check Skyward to find out your child’s progress and grades.
