Checklist and Timeline for Trade/Technical Program
Determine which trade you are interested in:
August-December: Review the job outlook, length of training required, and skills needed to make sure they match with your interests and abilities
Locate available schools or programs that offer training:
August-December: For apprenticeships - some companies prefer that you apply directly to them as an apprentice and they provide the hands-on training and courses directly through their own company program.
Determine the cost of the school or program and whether financial aid, tuition assistance, or employee benefits are available:
October-April
Attend classes and/or gain “on the job” training related to your skill or trade of interest:
March-May: Trade schools may involve living on a campus or attending full-time classes, while apprenticeship programs typically involve an “earn while you learn” training model of working in your trade and attending classes part-time.

VTI provides hands-on training in a variety of fields including electrical, plumbing, heating and air, welding, pipe-fitting, carpentry, masonry, multi-craft industrial maintenance, and project management. With the size of the building, VTI hopes to include other education opportunities that will provide further training and certification. Unique to VTI is the leadership training that will further enhance the students opportunities in the marketplace.
Students ranging from high school to adults have the opportunity to earn a journeyman’s license in a field of their choosing by attending classes two nights a week from 5-9pm. VTI uses curriculum from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), which is a standardized training process affiliated with the University of Florida. The Institute is also certified through the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).
