Important Financial Aid Terms

  1. Scholarships: Awarded by schools, colleges, community organizations, and other entities, this form of aid is often determined by merit and does not need to be paid back.
  2. Grants: Can be based off of merit/need often from states and federal sources, does not have to be paid back.
  3. Federal Loans: Often referred to as subsidized and unsubsidized loans, these scholarships are provided by the Federal government to help students pay for college. Must be paid back.
  4. PERKINS Loans: Federal loans often with low interest rates, must show exceptional financial need and must be paid back.
  5. Private Loans: Loans obtained from private financial institutions, often have higher interest rates and must be paid back.
  6. Work Study: Provides part time employment for students who qualify.
