PA521O COURSE DESCRIPTION
This yearlong introductory course is designed to give to develop the fundamentals of guitar, including the basics of:
maintenance of the instrument and how to change strings
playing position, finger picking, and flat picking
tuning by ear and with an electronic tuner
standard notation (note reading), tablature, and rhythm
chord structure and strum patterns
improvisation (soloing)
A variety of musical genres will be studied (classical, rock, folk, blues, country, world music, etc.). Students provide their own acoustic guitar and official JRHS “Guitar X-perience” shirts ($30). Guitar rental is available for $50/year. There is a required $10 music fee for participation in all high school music classes.
Please note: Guitar class is a co-curricular performing arts class. That means that the evening rehearsals and concerts are required and graded per CCPS policy. Expect a minimum of four rehearsals and two performances outside the school day. See the CCPS performance contract and Guitar Google Calendar for additional details.
Prerequisite: None.
Fulfills one fine arts credit or elective credit. Many students progress through intermediate, advanced, and honors guitar for all four years of high school.
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Classical or acoustic guitar (no electric guitars per CCPS policy)
Gigbag or hard case (with your name on it)
Collapsible footstool
Kyser style clamp capo (correct type for your guitar)
Extra set of strings (correct type for your guitar)
Flat picks (start off the year with at least 10)
2 Pencils (Do not write on sheet music in pen.)
Hal Leonard Guitar Method, Bk 1 ($9 without audio download or borrow from school)
Easy Pop Melodies for Guitar ($8 without audio download or borrow from school)
Music folder (provided by school)
JRHS “Guitar X-perience” Shirts (order for $30 by 10/15)
