Our Story

The International Baccalaureate Programme at Midlothian High School provides a rigorous, internationally recognized college preparatory programme designed for academically talented and highly motivated students in grades 9-12. We offer a four-year (two-part) programme: a pre-Diploma Programme (for grades 9-10) and the Diploma Programme (for grades 11-12).

Midlothian High School (MHS) became an IB World School in 1999. As a specialty center within Midlothian High School, we serve students of Chesterfield County Public Schools who would attend as their home (high) schools: Clover Hill, Cosby, James River, Monacan, and Midlothian. We currently serve more than 180 students in our IB Programme.

Our Mission

"The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right."

The IB Learner Profile is the IB mission statement in action.

These ten attributes reflect the holistic nature of an IB education and place the student at the center of that IB education. They are representative of the goals of IB and of attributes that all IB learners aspire towards. Through the development of these learner profile attributes, an IB education seeks to empower young people for a lifetime of learning, both independently and in collaboration with others.

Our Educational Philosophy

"The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge – students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally, and ethically. We strive to develop students who will build a better world through intercultural understanding and respect, alongside a healthy appetite for learning and excellence."

IB School Certification & Authorization

Midlothian High School is certified as an IB World School and is authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme to students in grades 11 and 12.

IB World Schools must undergo a lengthy authorization process and are, in effect, licensed by the IBO to offer the IB Diploma Programme. That authorization is reviewed every five years to ensure that the school is performing to IB expectations.

IB Teacher Certification

All IB teachers undertake training (at an IB-approved facility), will be certified, and are monitored by the International Baccalaureate Organization. All curriculums are updated regularly, and teachers receive constant curriculum updates, training, and support resources.

Curriculum Assessment

The IB is a set curriculum developed, monitored, and assessed by an agency external to Chesterfield County Public Schools—the International Baccalaureate Organization, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

Student Assessment

Much of the work completed for the IB diploma is set and scored by examiners and moderators of the International Baccalaureate Organization, ensuring that the quality of instruction and the student's work meets IBO standards.

Because the IBO's high standards in curriculum, instruction, and assessments are developed and monitored by an outside agency, there is a high degree of reliability in the IB Diploma results, and this reliability is recognized and rewarded by colleges and universities around the world with scholarship, placement, and credit award programs.
