• Using a deck of cards, play the following games:
  • Card Sort: Cards are perfect to use to practice sorting. You can sort them by suit, color, and numbers.
  • Put in Order: Practice counting and ordering numbers correctly. Start with just a few to order at a time. As you sort more cards and get better at ordering the numbers, try it with a timer.
  • Go Fish: Go fish is the classic number identification game. Asking each other if they have a certain number is a great way to continue practice with recognizing different numbers.
  • Play with Patterns: Use the different suits, colors, or face cards to create math patterns. ABC, AABB, and ABAB are common math patterns.
  • War: Comparing number values helps children develop number sense and sets them up for success with addition, subtraction, and beyond.

  • Kindergarten has worked the last 3 weeks on breaking apart numbers 3, 4, and 5. Using manipulatives, we have explored all of the ways we can break numbers into 2 parts.

  • Using items around your house (pennies, legos, paper clips, etc.), find as many ways to break apart numbers through 10!
  • Using cards, make parts of numbers through 5.
  • Using 5 small items (bracelets, blocks, etc.), play What’s Hiding with a partner! Place items behind your back (for numbers 3-5). Break the items into 2 parts behind your back. Show your partner one hand and keep the other hand hidden behind your back. Have your partner guess how many items are behind your back. Then trade and let your partner try!

  • Go on a shape hunt around your house! How many of each shape can you find?

Sight Words:

Below is the list of kindergarten sight words and activities that students can do to practice.

  • make cards with words and a few with the word POP! and place them in a container and students will pull them out and say the sight word, if they get it right they keep it, if not they put it back.

SIGHT WORD BINGO-

Make a grid (adjust the size depending on your child's abilities), and write a sight word in each square. Next, give your child some counters (ex.pennies, small toys) and read one of the words out loud. If your child can find the correct word, he/she gets to place a counter in the square. Once a row or a column is completed he/ she has won the game - BINGO!

SIGHT WORD SMASH UP-

You’ll need a small stuffed animal, index cards, and a marker. Write a sight word on each card. Spread the word cards on the floor. Shout out words and have your child toss the stuffed animal onto the word read to them. Next, have your child shout out the words they’ve learned.

WORD WALK-

Use white paper plates and a marker to write a sight word on each of the plates. Create a path all around the house using the paper plates. Start at the beginning of the path and have your child read each word as he/she walks to the end of the path. Your child can pick up the plate each time he/she reads a word. Repeat the game by creating a new path!

SPOT THE WORD-

Write 20 sight words on 20 pieces of paper. Use words you want your child to review or new words to learn. Stick the words on a wall. Get a flashlight and dim the lights. Shine the light on a word. Ask your child to read the word. Switch it up by reading a word and having your child find it with the flashlight. Have fun!

Leprechaun Trap STEAM Activity:

Fill the cup with water (air)

1. Add a thin layer of shaving cream (clouds – water vapor)
2. Place drops of blue food coloring on the top of the shaving cream (water droplets)
3. Wait for the “rain” to fall
