COUNSELING PROGRAM

Elementary school counselors work as a team with staff, parents/guardians, and community members to ensure each student's success through a comprehensive developmental school counseling program based on the American School Counselor Association National Model.

We follow the national and state standards - ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors for Student Success and Standards for School Counseling Programs in Virginia Public Schools.

SCHOOL COUNSELING CURRICULUM

School counselors provide developmentally appropriate, data-informed lessons and/or activities to all students. Lessons are preventative, based on student needs, and support the social-emotional curriculum at Crenshaw. All lessons align with national and state school counseling standards.

SMALL GROUP COUNSELING

Support groups allow groups of 4-6 students to learn together in a caring and confidential setting. Groups meet for approximately 30 minutes once a week during lunch for 6 sessions. Goals of group counseling are to improve achievement, attendance, mental health and wellness, and/or behavior.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

Individual counseling is available at the request of the student, parent, or staff member. While students may see the school counselor at any time for brief sessions, parental permission is required prior to a series of planned sessions. Permission form for individual counseling

CRISIS COUNSELING

School counselors assist students in handling critical and emergency crisis situations.

CONSULTATION, COLLABORATION, REFERRALS

School counselors consult and collaborate with school personnel, families, and community stakeholders to advocate for student needs.

PROGRAM PLANNING

No more than 20% of a school counselor's time should be spent planning, managing, and assessing school counseling activities and performing fair-share responsibilities.
