All students are required to compete in competitions. Some competitions require students to prepare ahead of time or to bring their own supplies, while others do not.
Make sure that when you register for your competitions to choose two DIFFERENT choices for your First and Second Choices. If you choose the same competition for both choices, you will be forfeiting your right to compete in that competition, and you will be placed in a competition appropriate for your level.
Please read the following competition descriptions to make sure you are prepared for the day of Congrès. Competitions listed in red require advanced preparation and competitions listed in blue do not.
Specialized Competitions
The following competitions are "specialized" and require teacher approval. Students should indicate their interest in these competitions on the registration form and follow up with their teachers about selection. Students interested in these options should pick two backup competitions.
Marché
This group competition requires students to design and staff a market stand during lunch. Student will use the morning competition block to prepare their stands. Students can sell items (food or trinkets) or an experience (carnival style games) for tickets, which all attendees will recieve. Market stands are divided into HS and MS divisions and the judges will interact with each stand and consider stand "profits" in the judging. Marché Stand themes must be unique, so teachers need to communicate chosen themes to the organizational team promptly to ensure no overlap between stands.
Art Reproduction
Students must bring their own supplies and only two students per school may compete. This competition is divided in HS and MS divisions. Winners are determined by the closest reproduction of the original work.
Pâtisserie
This individual competition requires students to bake a French or Francophone pastry to present for judging. Students will need to prepare 1-3 samples of their baked good for judges to taste. Baked goods will be stored in a refridgerator until judging. This competition will be divided by level (Lower - French 1/2 and Upper - French 3+)
Tournoi de pétanque
This team competition will be divided into MS and HS divisions. Students will enjoy a trounament style pétanque game. Students can plan their own teams within their school or be matched with a team the day of Congrès.
Standard Competitions
These competitions can be selected by students when registering and do not require any teacher approval.
Dictée
This individual competition requires students to listen to a text being read in French. Students will then complete a fill in style dictée sheet based on what they have heard. This competition is divided by level (1, 2, 3, 4+) and graded on accuracy of the written French.
Idole Française
This individual or pair competition requires students to perform 90 seconds of a song in French. Students may choose their songs, but should make sure their choices are school appropriate. This competition is divided into HS and MS divisions. Students are responsible for providing their own musical track as an MP3 file to Congrès organizers. The top three HS division performers will perform at our closing ceremonies and be voted on by all participants to determine the winner!
Lecture Dramatique
This individual competition requires students to read a piece of French text to be ''played'' on a stage. Students should include as much emotion in their readings as possible. Memorization of the texts is not required and students will be given copies to read from on the day of Congrès, though they will have access in advance to prepare and practice. This competition is divided by level (1, 2, 3, 4+) and judged on both accuracy and emotion.
Les Costumes
This individual competitions requires students to dress up and present themselves as a person (real or ficticious) from French or Francophone background. Students will be asked to present themselves as this person in the first person (je). This competition will be divided by level (1, 2, 3, 4+) and judged on both the quality of the spoken French and the creativity of the costume/acting.
Presentations are expected to be level appropriate and designed by students without the use of translation tools/AI. Students should be prepared to give a presentation of the following leangths by level:
Level 1 - 1-2 minutes of presentation, mostly in the present tense
Level 2 - 1-2 minutes of presentation, using both present and past tenses
Level 3 - 2-4 minutes of presentation, using both present and past tenses
Level 4+ - 2-3 minutes of presentation, using a variety of tenses and sentence structures.
Posters
This individual competition requires students to prepare and present a poster that discusses a French or Francophone technology or invention that ties in to our theme of Vers l'avenir. Students will be divided and judged by level (1, 2, 3, 4+). All student posters should be student made - no use of translator tools / AI. Students are reminded that they will be judged by their level and to worry more about being authentic than being complex. All posters should follow the following guidelines:
Posters should be no larger than a standard tri-fold board
Posters should include student generated, level appropriate French
Posters should include relevant visuals
Student presentation guidelines by level:
Level 1 - 1-2 minutes of presentation, mostly in the present tense
Level 2 - 1-2 minutes of presentation, using both present and past tenses
Level 3 - 2-4 minutes of presentation, using both present and past tenses
Level 4+ - 2-3 minutes of presentation, using a variety of tenses and sentence structures.
Que savez-vous?
This individual competiton tests your trivia knowledge of French and francophone culture. Students will be divided by level (1, 2, 3). Please note that students in levels 4 and above are not permitted to choose this competition. Students will be given a series of topics such as cities, countries, athletes, actors, singers, etc. and asked to provide as many examples as they can for each category within the provided time.
Récitation
This individual competition requires students to memorize a level-appropriate text and recite it in French. Students will be provided the text in advance of Congrès and will need to memorize it before competition time. Students will be divided by level (1, 2, 3, 4+) and will be judged based on accuracy and correctness of pronunciation.
Bande Dessinée
This individual competition requires students to write a dialogue based on a provided French language comic strip. No electronics allowed! (i.e: translation apps). This competition is divided by level (1, 2, 3, and 4+) and is judged on the accuracy of the French as well as the logical connection to the provided comic strip.
Corrections
This individual competition requires students to review a French text and locate the 15 errors within it. Students must then try to correct the error accurately. Students will be awarded 1 point for each error found and 2 points for each accurate correction. This competition is divided in four (4) levels (1, 2, 3, and 4+).
Improv
This competition will pair students randomly and provide them with a prop and prompt. Students will then create and present a short dialogue based on the provided item and prompt to the judges. Judges will be evaluating students on both their French accuracy and creativity. This competition will have a lower division (French 1/2) and uppper division (French 3+).
