Here are some things to check before using "legacy" instruments.
The cost of renting an instrument can present a financial obstacle for some families. Each school has a limited stock of school owned instruments, and teachers have access to various instrument scholarship programs from different community organizations. Quantities of these instruments vary from school to school and are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
