The Research Group on Intellectual Property and Creative Markets (GEPI-MeC/UnB), founded in 2026, is affiliated with the Center on Law and Regulation (NDSR) of the School of Law at the University of Brasília (UnB), where it carries out its activities.
GEPI-MeC's primary objective is to foster academic debate on intellectual property and the regulation of creative markets, introducing a topic still largely unexplored at the University of Brasília. The Group's object of study is the research and discussion of current legal issues in these two areas in Brazil and worldwide, encompassing copyrights, collective rights management, cultural funding instruments, the architecture of creative markets, technological innovations, software copyright, and the regulation of different sectors of the Creative Economy — including music, audiovisual, literature and publishing, video games, design and fashion, advertising and marketing, architecture and urbanism, among others. GEPI-MeC thus maintains a multidisciplinary perspective, attentive to the interfaces between these two fields and other areas of knowledge, beyond sectoral regulatory law.
To this end, GEPI-MeC brings together members of the academic community, representatives of government bodies, professionals from creative industries, intellectual property specialists, and representatives of organized civil society, in order to build an arena that enables cross-cutting debate and the sharing of experiences and different points of view. Although the Group's focus lies within the field of Law, GEPI-MeC remains open to contributions from professionals in other areas of knowledge, such as Economics, Arts, Communication, ICT, and Architecture and Urban Planning.
Building bridges between academia, professionals in related fields, and civil society is fundamental for GEPI-MeC to provide consistent and effective contributions aimed at developing knowledge about the regulation of creative markets and intellectual property. GEPI-MeC's activities include holding meetings, conferences, lectures, training sessions, classes, and workshops, as well as the producing research, academic articles, and other documents that aim to compose the Group's institutional memory and contribute to the generation of knowledge in the areas of interest.
