What do you need to do?

You need to prepare a 5-10 minute talk on a topic of your choice.

You can use cue cards/brief notes but you must NOT read from a script.

You will have to answer questions after your speech.

Your speech, and your answers to questions, will be recorded.

You will be given a grade of either Fail, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Tips

• Think about the structure of your speech. You want to make this absolutely clear to your audience right from the beginning so that they can follow what you are saying.

• Think about your audience. Think about how you can relate your speech to them and keep them interested in what you are saying.

• Think about how you want your audience to react or feel. Think about how you can modify your language and your delivery to reflect this.

• Think about what the message of your speech is. What do you want the audience to take away with them? You need to have a clear purpose to your speech.

• You are not allowed a script, but you can make some notes on cue cards. Practise your speech lots. Record yourself in front of a camera so you can assess yourself and modify your speech accordingly.

• Think about the sorts of questions that people might have, and prepare some potential responses to these.
