National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the organization that oversees and regulates college athletics for over 1,200 colleges and universities across the United States. It ensures fair competition, academic accountability, and the eligibility of student-athletes across three competitive divisions: Division I, II, and III.
If you’re a high school athlete with dreams of playing at the collegiate level, it’s important to understand NCAA rules and timelines—especially for Divisions I and II, which require registration with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Division I
Largest athletic programs with the most media exposure
Offers the most athletic scholarships, often full rides
High level of competition and time commitment
Examples: University of Texas, Alabama, UCLA
Division II
Mid-sized schools with competitive sports programs
Offers partial athletic scholarships (may be combined with academic/need-based aid)
Balanced focus on athletics, academics, and campus life
Examples: Texas A&M-Commerce, Angelo State University
Division III
Smaller, academically focused schools
No athletic scholarships, but students may receive academic or need-based financial aid
Strong emphasis on the overall student experience
Examples: Trinity University, Emory University, MIT
If you're planning to compete at the Division I or II level, you must:
Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at eligibilitycenter.org
Submit your transcripts, test scores (if required), and amateurism certification
Meet core course GPA and test score requirements (subject to change, especially with test-optional policies)
Track your eligibility status regularly and stay in contact with your counselor or coach
Meeting NCAA eligibility ensures you're academically and athletically ready to compete at the college level. Starting early—as soon as 9th or 10th grade—can help you plan your courses, stay on track, and prepare for the recruiting process.
