The Indigenous Support Worker Project (ISWP) was created within the Homelessness Working Group of the Montreal Indigenous Community NETWORK in 2019, and is currently funded by the city of Montreal. Incorporated as a non-profit organization in May 2022, the ISWP is the first peer-led Indigenous street community organization in Montreal. It works to advocate and provide direct support for Indigenous people with lived experiences of homelessness.
The ISWP grounds itself in Indigenous harm reduction practices 'by and for' Indigenous communities and applies a rights-based approach centring Indigenous ways of being, knowing, and healing. The organization provides resources and services that respond to the community's needs including the distribution of harm reduction items, health services, access to low barrier Indigenous cultural and food related activities. Additionally, they offer training and employment opportunities for Indigenous workers with lived experience of homelessness working in the mental health, street outreach, and/or homelessness-serving sector. Its team of peer street crew members, Indigenous health navigators, and street nurses circulate the Plateau-Mont-Royal and Ville-Marie areas each week, providing dependable street-level services to Indigenous communities battling homelessness in these areas.

The Montreal Autonomous Tenant’s Union (MATU) is a tenants union committed to using direct measures to pressure landlords into lowering rents, doing repairs and maintenance, and to prevent evictions. MATU uses combative action in the form of marches and pickets lines in front of landlords' offices and homes, banner drops, telephone campaigns and boycotts to protect the fundamental right of housing.
The union operates as a horizontal organization independent of governments, funders, or corporations and entirely run by unpaid union members. In its work, MATU has supported the unionization of several buildings across Montreal, won the direct financial reparations and repairs, and successfully aided tenants in resisting renoviction. MATU aims to develop a popular fighting force that can beat landlords, abolish rent, spread self-organization, and expropriate property.
