A mixed-methods research project · Self-funded · Field research phase begins 2027
This project explores how congregations in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) define, practice, and communicate discipleship, with the goal of identifying functional models that integrate spiritual formation, justice, and leadership development into congregational life.
How do congregations in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) define and enact discipleship that encompasses spiritual formation, justice, and leadership formation, and what models are practical and transferable for other congregations?
Nationwide survey
A survey of Disciples congregations across North America to identify those with active, intentional discipleship practices, and to understand what those practices look like.
In-depth conversations
From the survey pool, up to 12 congregations will be selected for focus groups, interviews, and site visits (early 2027).
Practical resources
Findings will be translated into a field guide, training workshops, and materials designed for use by clergy, lay leaders, and congregations.
This research approaches discipleship broadly, as encompassing four interconnected dimensions:
Personal and growing engagement with Jesus through prayer, Scripture, and spiritual practice.
Lifelong growth through disciplines, accountability, and Spirit-led transformation in community
Learning from and passing faith to one another across generations and relationships.
Discipleship lived outward through justice, compassion, and community transformation.
The survey takes approximately 8 minutes
All survey responses are confidential. Individuals and congregations will not be identified in any published findings without explicit permission
Data will be stored securely and used only for this research project
Participation in Phase 2 (focus groups and site visits) is entirely voluntary and a separate invitation
You may withdraw from the study at any time without consequence
We welcome responses from all DOC congregations,
regardless of size, setting, or how developed your discipleship ministry feels.
