MyZone Lesson Wednesday 22nd April 2026

Next Wednesday is INTERNATIONAL EARTH DAY!!

We are doing MyZone lessons about this because...

Our International Earth Day lesson is designed to help students understand that environmental change is not just something decided by governments or world leaders — it is shaped by the everyday actions of people like them.

The 2026 theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights a key idea: real environmental progress is ongoing and does not depend on a single law, election, or leader. Instead, it is built through the combined efforts of communities, schools, families, and individuals. 

These lessons will teach students about sustainability, global responsibility, and decision-making. It encourages them to see how issues like climate change, pollution, and resource use are linked to real-world systems — including governments, businesses, and local communities — while also showing that solutions often start at a smaller, more personal level.

The lessons will encourage students to develop a sense of agency by exploring real examples of community action (such as clean-ups, reducing waste, and raising awareness).

These will encourage the ideas that:

• Small actions can scale into larger change

• Collective voices can influence leadership and policy

• Education and awareness are powerful tools for long-term impact

Importantly, these lessons also support critical thinking. Students will have the opportunity to evaluate how effective different environmental actions are, consider multiple perspectives, and reflect on what realistic change looks like in their own school or community.

Year 7 – International Earth Day: Small Actions, Big Impact

This Lesson covers:

• What Earth Day is, including its origin in 1970 and its purpose to raise awareness about environmental issues

• The 2026 theme “Our Power, Our Planet” and its focus on individual and collective responsibility

• The concept of collective action — how many small individual actions combine to create large-scale change

• Why Earth Day matters: the Earth provides essential resources such as clean air, fresh water, food, and natural materials

• The impact of human activities on the environment, including pollution, deforestation, and climate change

• The consequences of environmental damage, including biodiversity loss and threats to ecosystems, food systems, and human health

• How climate change leads to extreme weather events such as heatwaves and flooding

• Practical actions students can take at home, school, and in their community to reduce environmental harm and contribute positively

Year 8 – International Earth Day: Understanding the Crisis, Taking Responsibility

This Lesson covers:

• What the climate crisis is and why it is considered one of the most serious global challenges today

• How human activities are the main cause of environmental damage and resource depletion

• The role of organisations like Earth Day Network and World Wide Fund for Nature in raising awareness and promoting action

• The causes and effects of pollution, including air and plastic pollution

• The causes and consequences of deforestation, including habitat loss and increased climate change

• How environmental issues impact not just the planet, but also human health, economies, and future sustainability

• The concept of greenhouse gases and how they contribute to global warming

• The importance of responsibility and action at individual, local, and global levels to address the crisis

Year 9 – International Earth Day: Power, Politics and the Planet

This Lesson covers:

• The role of Earth Day in raising awareness of global environmental issues and collective responsibility

• The influence of governments, corporations, and society on environmental outcomes

• Different types of power:

  1. 1. • Political power (governments)

        • Economic power (corporations)

        • Social power (culture and public behaviour)

• How these groups are interconnected (eg. laws, lobbying, consumer demand, public opinion)

• The barriers to environmental progress, including political, economic, and social challenges

• Evaluation of current actions (eg. renewable energy, plastic bans) and their limitations

• Critical thinking about whether current efforts to tackle climate change are sufficient

• Designing a realistic environmental campaign, applying knowledge of systems, behaviour, and influence

Year 10 – NO MYZONE DUE TO MOCK EXAMS

Cancelled Event

Due to unforseen circumstances the PFA have had to cancel the Music Bingo scheduled for next Friday 24th April.

Their next event will be Friday 5th June 2026, more details will follow shortly.
