Our History

Originally established as the Notre Dame Foundation in 1991, the purpose was to create a sound financial base through an endowment to support Catholic Schools in Mitchell. Over the past twenty- seven years our Foundation has experienced many changes including the name. Most recently known as the Mitchell Foundation for Catholic Education, the goal remained of building a solid financial base for Catholic Education for our faith community. In addition, through its financial resources, the Foundation's mission has been to support the spiritual, educational, and social well-being of our Catholic faith community.

In August of 2017 the local Board of Directors, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, envisioned a broader purpose. The Mitchell Catholic Foundation was formed through the cooperation of the Catholic Community Foundation for Eastern SD. A new vision was established to support the ministries of the entire Catholic community and beyond.

Guiding the local Foundation is a Board of Directors and Advisory Council consisting of Holy Spirit and Holy Family laity and clergy. This board oversees all investment activity by the Foundation, providing expert and sound leadership for the Foundation’s assets. The Foundation’s ministry is to enhance the stewardship of the Catholic community whereby the faithful share their expertise, time, talent, wisdom, and financial resources for the good of the church.

We wish to continue to financially assist and lead John Paul II Elementary School, the Family Formation Program, and the Parishes of Holy Family and Holy Spirit to new heights of Catholic excellence.
