Donald Roster wanted a way to honor his brother and best friend, Clinton "Jim" Roster. They had a very close relationship; more so than most brothers since they farmed together up until the day Jim entered the nursing home. Don and Jim were two of four Roster boys that grew up on a farm near Farmer, SD. The Roster children all attended St. Peter's Catholic School and Church in Farmer, SD. All four boys went into farming, staying close to home. Don and Jim farmed together northwest of Farmer for many years before retiring and moving to Mitchell in 1993. Upon moving to Mitchell, Jim and Don joined Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Their faith was so important to them, that finding a home near the church was a priority. They managed to make a home right across the street from Holy Spirit Church and John Paul II School. Jim's health declined and he made the move to nearby Avera Brady Nursing home. He passed away on February 8, 2007. Donald remained living in the home across the street from the church and school until entering Firesteel Nursing Home. Don passed away November 26, 2018.
In December of 2009, Donald started the Clinton and Donald Roster Endowment for the benefit of Catholic Education in Mitchell. The endowment helps preserve the past and protect the future of Catholic education in Mitchell. Each year, the interest from the endowment is used to support John Paul II School and the Family Formation program of Holy Spirit and Holy Family Catholic parishes.

An endowment fund is a perpetual fund, created by charitable donations in the form of cash, stocks, mutual funds, real property, or other personal property given to the Foundation. The practice of investing the principal, rather than spending it, creates a perpetual fund. Most of an endowment’s annual earnings are distributed to the designated benefactors, in this case, John Paul II School. Endowments provide a “forever-giving” funding source for Catholic programs and activities. A gift in your will could establish an endowment and a lasting legacy for you, your family, and benefactor.
