From the GaDOE Inspire Standards:
In second grade, English Language Arts instruction builds upon foundational literacy skills by enhancing students' understanding of print concepts, phonological awareness, and phonics as they decode and encode increasingly complex words in context and isolation. Students expand their vocabulary and apply growing knowledge of grammar and sentence structure to speak and write in complete, coherent sentences. Reading comprehension skills develop through engagement with a variety of literary and informational texts across different genres and purposes. Students continue to refine handwriting and fine motor skills while using working memory to transcribe oral language into written form. Writing instruction supports composing for multiple audiences and purposes, with students strengthening their ability to express ideas clearly across various modes and genres. This subject must utilize the K–2 standards and second grade expectations outlined in Georgia’s K–12 English Language Arts (ELA) Standards.
