If your child has been a student in the Columbia County School System since Kindergarten, this will be their first year on a numeric grading scale. In K-2, students are graded on a standards based system - they are given a 3 for mastery of standards, a 2 for progressing towards the standard, and a 1 for not progressing at all. Please be aware that as we grade assignments this year, your child will receive numeric grades. The grading scale is: A is 100-90, B is 89-80, C is 79-73, D is 72-70, and F is 69 and below. They will also receive a numeric grade in science and social studies this year, where previously, they were given participation grades.
Retake policy on assessments: Your child has the opportunity to retake an assessment once per assessment. The retake must occur prior to another assessment in the subject and the retake grade will not be higher than a 90 in the gradebook.
Students are expected to gain mastery of content standards in reading and mathematics.
Students are expected to know their addition, subtraction, and multiplication math facts (0-10) before 4th grade.
Writing Expectations – Write at least 1 paragraph with appropriate introduction and closing for the following genres: informational, opinion, and narrative.
STEM Expectations: Engage in activities that require engagement in the Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve, Present).
If your child will be going home in a different way, you must submit transportation changes in writing BEFORE NOON on the day the transportation change needs to be made. If a change is necessary in the middle of the day please call and inform the front office.
Morning drop-off – Parents should stay in the car rider line unless otherwise directed. No student should be let out of a car unless there are in the designated drop-off area. Please keep speeds to 10 mph or less and refrain from using cell phones.
Dismissal – Please have car rider tags clearly displayed. If you do not have a car rider tag, you will be asked to show your photo ID. We will then have to get confirmation from the front office if you are an approved pick up person for the child(ren). Please pay attention to teachers who are directing cars. Parents must pick us students by 4:00. After 4:00 PM students will be taken to aftercare and there will be a $10 charge. Please keep speeds to 10 mph or less and refrain from using cell phones.
Walkers: Please make sure you have your walker tag to pickup your child. If your child is a Flowing Wells walker you must pickup your child on the school side of Flowing Wells. If they are a Spring Lakes walker you must bring them to the gate by the buses.
Our lunch is earlier in the day, I recommend you send in a snack with your child each day (nothing that requires a spoon, utensil, etc., please). This is a working snack and will be eaten while working.
You can send a water bottle with your child to class daily - water fountains will be used to refill water bottles.
Homework will not be given daily as our third grade team believes we work our brains very hard during the school day - however, from time to time if we feel students need extra help in a certain area, we will provide extra practice.
Students will be responsible for studying for assessments- they will write down dates for tests on their vocabulary/spelling lists and study guides.
