Perennial Math

Dear Families,

We are excited to share that our students will be participating in the Perennial Math Competition from January through April. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to challenge themselves, grow as problem‐solvers, and celebrate their mathematical thinking! 

During the first half of the year, we complete practice competitions and learn strategies to solve complex critical thinking math problems. Then, once a month from January-April, our students will complete one printed “test” consisting of six problem‐solving questions. After students finish, their scores will be entered into the official competition platform.

Students will compete in one of two divisions based on grade level:

● Rookie Division: Grades 3–4

● Intermediate Division: Grades 5–6

All students will receive a certificate of participation. A gold medal will be awarded to the grade‐level champion, students scoring in the top 10% will receive a dog tag, and top‐performing teams will earn a plaque. 

Perennial Math was founded by Dr. Sylvia Dean, a gifted education specialist and administrator with 26 years of experience in Huntsville, Alabama—also known as the Rocket City, home to NASA, Space Camp, and many technology and defense organizations.

Dr. Dean has earned numerous awards for her leadership in math, robotics, and technology competitions, including the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, IEEE Pre‐University Educator, Technology Teacher of the Year, and the Air Force Association State Teacher of the Year. She created Perennial Math to give students more opportunities to showcase their talents and to support teachers in developing strong mathematical thinking in the classroom. Dr. Dean is passionate about making math exciting, engaging, and meaningful for all learners.
