Course Information
Guitar is a course designed for students to perform, respond, create, and connect to music through the guitar. Students will learn basic guitar playing skills, music theory, improvisation, songwriting, and also the growth and evolution of American Rock music. Students will learn guitar concepts in a large group setting and practice these concepts within small groups. Whether new to guitar or a student looking to grow, continued practice and focus on growth as a musician will be key to the success of a student in guitar class.
Assessment/Grading Information:
Students will be graded on the following grading scale for Guitar Class:
40% Formative Grade: Daily classwork and weekly review questions.
60% Summative Grade:
Playing Tests 30%: Weekly playing tests will be on Friday. Playing test music will be released every Monday.
Written Tests 30%: Weekly quizzes will be held on Friday. Quizzes will be a review of each week's topics.
Missed playing or written tests may be made with up Mr. Boykin before or after school.
Assignments and Assessments will be combined to 80% of a student's overall grade. The final exam will make up 20% of the student's grade.

Acoustic Guitar. Guitar class has guitars for in-school use only. Having a personal guitar will allow a student to take their guitars home to practice

Mr. Boykin’s Biography
Mr. H. Rutledge Boykin serves as the Assistant Band Director at Greenbrier High School and has the privilege to be the Greenbrier Guitar teacher. Mr. Boykin’s teaching experience includes working at many different schools in the CSRA across all grade levels as well as presenting his session “Turn Your Guitar Class up to 11 with History of Rock” at the Georgia Music Educators In-Service Conference. Along with teaching, Mr. Boykin has performed in multiple countries. Mr. Boykin obtained his Bachelors of Music Education from Georgia Southern University and is currently working on his Masters in Music Education at the University of South Carolina. Mr. Boykin has been playing guitar for almost 20 years and believes that learning guitar is a fantastic avenue for students to experience music as well as gain a life skill they can use beyond high school.
