First Grade

Meet The Teachers!

Shannon Burton

I have been teaching for 10 years and am so excited to begin year 11 this school term. I grew up in Glascock County, but have spent all of my adult life living in McDuffie County. I received my Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education at Augusta State University. I also hold a Master's and Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Augusta State University. In addition to my degrees, I hold a reading endorsement and a media certification. I am the wife to my sweet husband, Jason, mother to 2 wild boys, Charlie, who is 4 and William who is 2, and our new daughter Sara Jane who is 2 months old. Since the age of 3, teaching has been my dream. I had amazing and inspiring teachers growing up and want to be the same for my students daily. I consider it a blessing to be able to live my dream every day and teach your precious babies. I believe that each child has a talent and it is my job to help grow that talent and shine! Welcome to first grade!

Taylor Carter

Welcome to First Grade at Baker Place Elementary! I have been teaching for 12 years. I taught third and fourth grades before moving to first grade, where I have stayed for 10 years. I love teaching children how to read and watching the magic in their eyes when they figure it out.

I'm originally from Aiken, SC and went to Aiken County Schools from Kindergarten - 12th grade. I attended Auburn University (War Eagle!) for my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I earned my M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Georgia Southern University, and am currently working toward my Ed.S. in Teaching and Leading at Augusta University.

In my spare time, I enjoy watching college football, working puzzles, and visiting the beach and Disney World (pictured to side with my mom!). I live in the Grovetown area with my misunderstood cat, LuLu.

Cherie Howard

This will be my 25th year of teaching. I taught in Burke County for 4 years, 20 years in McDuffie County, and this year is my 1st year in Columbia County. During my years in McDuffie County, I was included in the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers’ edition twice, selected by my colleagues as “Top Dog” at two elementary schools, and chosen as a Feature Teacher. Seven years ago I was chosen as Maxwell Elementary’s Teacher of the Year, and then I had the honor of being named McDuffie County’s Teacher of the Year. I am excited about bringing my years of experience to Columbia County and continuing this tradition of hard work and dedication for the children here at Baker Place. I am committed to making this year a success for everyone involved. Get ready for this exciting adventure! We are “Howard’s Hunters.” Join the learning safari!

I have been teaching for 26 years. I have a 21 year old son, Evan, who is majoring in electrical engineering and computer science at GSU and a 16 year old daughter, Avery, who will be a drum major at GHS next year. I recently completed my STEM certification and I will finish my masters degree in instruction in December.

Kellye Panke

Welcome to 1st Grade! I am Mrs. Panke. I am excited to start my 23rd year of teaching. I have spent 13 of those years teaching first grade. I have a wonderful husband, 2 sweet daughters and a Brittany Springer Spaniel. Some of my favorite things are reading, children’s literature, shopping, and hanging out with my daughters!

Allison Renew

I was born and raised in the CSRA and I am an alumni of Greenbrier High School. I received my Bachelors in Early Childhood Education and my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction at Augusta State University. This is my 11th year teaching. I have taught pre-k, 1st, and 2nd grades. My husband and I live in the Grovetown area with our daughter, Katelynn, and our Australian Sheppard, Shelby. Katelynn will be 5 this year and we just love watching her grow. In my spare time, I enjoy shopping and watching movies. I teach because I want to encourage and support students in learning what their full potential is. It’s time to shine!

Rachel Schneider

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I live at home with my husband, son and daughter. We are expecting our third child in September! This is my 6th year teaching first grade at Baker Place Elementary and I also taught for 5 years in Richmond County. I graduated from Augusta State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and also a Master's of Education degree. Every year I look forward to watching my students learn and grow. Cheers to a fun year of learning!
