Course Description: 

This course is designed to offer students (preferably upper classmen - juniors or seniors) the opportunity to become effective and efficient multi-skilled healthcare providers as they develop a working knowledge of various allied health opportunities. Students focusing on a career path in the healthcare field may apply classroom/lab knowledge and skills in the clinical setting as they participate in direct or simulated client care. The curriculum allows instructors to provide options for classroom/student growth opportunities in area(s) of interest to the student. These options may be determined by community need, available resources, &/or student interest, etc.

Course Goals:

1.      Develop the basic skills and knowledge necessary to apply the principles and competencies performed in the healthcare industry.

2.     Develop attitudes and employability skills consistent with those expected of an individual working in the healthcare industry and society in general.

3.      Prepare for Allied Health End of Pathway Certified Clinical   Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification.

4.      Exhibit professional work ethic/employability skills and conduct at all times.

Instructional Resources:

A variety of instructional methods are used that include group assignments, discussion, role playing, hands on activities, guest speakers, audiovisual presentation, anatomical models, computer technology assignments, projects and textbooks.

2) Students will have access to National Healthcareer Association   (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) modules.

Evaluation:

Evaluation is an ongoing daily process.  Formative Assessments include any method of evaluating students during the learning (ex. written or oral Q&A, quizzes, projects and teacher observation), and Summative Assessments include any method of evaluating students after the learning (ex. tests and practical application). Students will have one opportunity to take a resassessment if they fail the first summative assessment.  The maximum grade of the reassessment is a 90.  No minimum grade.  Students will need to invest time in relearning (ex. revisiting formative assessment material) prior to reassessment. Once reassessment is complete, the new grade will be indicated in Infinite Campus.  If the student chooses not to reassess prior to the end of the semester, the original grade will be entered. 

Grade Distribution:

Summative Assessments (evaluating after learning) 60 %

Formative Assessments (evaluating during learning) 40 % 

Semester Formula: 80%

1st Semester and Final Exam = 20%

Absences / Tardies:

Excellent, prompt attendance is vital to your success in this course. It is the responsibility of the student to make arrangements for any missed work and to complete it within the specified time limit set by school policy.  Specific rules for clinical absences and tardies will be on the clinical contract.  Tardies will be handled according to GTHS policies.

Classroom Routine: 

1.      Student must be in the classroom when the tardy bell rings ready to engage and learn.

2.      All assignments are expected to be submitted on the assigned due date.  

3.      Student must clean up his/her desk or lab area before leaving the classroom and place chairs back under tables.

4.      You are expected to participate in classroom activities and skills.

Employability Skills:

This class will be operated similar to the way a healthcare facility or other type business may operate.  Employability skills are extremely important in any work setting and are crucial in the healthcare industry.  Each student is expected to exhibit a professional image and appropriate behavior.  Students will be responsible for following classroom rules and guidelines, clinical facility policies and procedures as well as county policies regarding conduct.   

You represent the Healthcare Science Technology Education (HSTE) Program at Grovetown High School.  Your actions outside this classroom must be appropriate.  Any misconduct will be handled in accordance with Columbia County’s code of conduct policies including dismissal from the program.
