Dear Parents,
It is indeed a pleasure to have your child in my homeroom this year. To start off the year right, here is this Parent Survival Handbook that has been assembled to help you understand everything regarding 4th grade...the different subjects we cover, our discipline procedures, homework requirements, etc., which are in conjunction with other vital information that will enable us to make this a very positive and rewarding year. I feel as though open lines of communication between the parent, student, and teacher are the key to promoting an educational climate that is conducive to learning. I am looking forward to working with you and your child. Together we can make a difference! whether on-sight, virtual, or hybrid, please help me by sending me well-rested children with full tummies and a hug and a kiss still fresh on their minds. This sets the tone for a wonderful day. Please feel free to contact me via email or class dojo at any time if there is a question or situation you would like to discuss. You will receive additional communication throughout the school year. I look forward to building a relationship with you and your child and thus providing the best education that I am capable of giving.
I pray that God will give us wisdom and discernment as we mold and shape these beautiful souls God has entrusted to us. I look forward to an amazing year…
Blessings,
Ms. Mehret
Your child will have several assignments during the school day for which he or she is responsible. Due to uncertain circumstances, if your child for any reason is unable to complete an assignment, this will automatically become homework to be completed at home (for on sight kids) and returned to school the following day. It is the student’s responsibility to return in work to the appropriate area WITHOUT any reminders. Work not returned in may result in a student receiving a zero, which will be changed as soon as the student submits work. Project due dates will be posted on class calendar. Students, on-sight, virtual, and hybrid, are expected to adhere to these due dates. Please talk to your child about the importance of completing assignments in a timely manner.
ELA
Mr. Maldonado will be teaching ELA. This includes Reading, Grammar, Spelling, and Writing. The students are required to purchase the books and are responsible for bringing them to class when directed. 1st: Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing-Judy Blume... 2nd: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever-Barbara Robinson...3rd(Spring) Number the Stars-Lois Lowry...4th(Spring) The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe-C.S. Lewis. We will also be doing various styles of Writing throughout the year.
Independent Reading
Students will be accountable for silent reading. Students may have the opportunity to read in class when they finish assignments or when not in guided reading groups. They are required to earn 15 points per nine weeks for AR this year.
Science
Ms. Keener will We be teaching Science and Math this year. For Science we will be using BJU science curriculum, which will help students develop understanding of God as the creator and sustainer of the universe (Col. 1:16-17). They will be able to identify the precision of God’s creation (Ecc. 3:1-8) and they will develop a curiosity, wonder, and appreciation of God’s creation (Psalm 19:1). This class will involve many hands-on experiences to help the students grasp some abstract concepts. We will also use technology to expand our learning.
Math
Our math curriculum this year is Bob Jones Math, which is a curriculum that cultivates the Christian Worldview. Math concepts will be explained using biblical truths and principles. This curriculum highlights Christian character traits and points out that Math is an important tool for making wise use of God’s creation. Students will understand math so that they can become problem solvers as they develop a Christian worldview (Proverbs 3:13). During the school day, your child will learn concepts presented in an engaging format and practice those concepts to develop a deep understanding. Your child will also work from the student book with other children to solve problems, participate in activities or games, and discuss their findings in class. Your child will be assigned pages from the Workbook as individual assignment.
Bible
Ms. Mehret will teach Bible and Social Studies this year. We will continue to use the “Purposeful Design” text/work book, which will focus on the foundational teachings from the Bible about the nature and character of God, the qualities of His people, and His church. The students will have weekly memory verse. In order to help them memorize it, they are expected to write and submit the assigned Memory Verses three days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday). They are expected to recite the memory verse every Thursday. They will have a Bible written test every Friday.
Social Studies
This year, we will use the Pearson ‘MyWorld’ Texas Social Studies curriculum. As we look at our history through a Christian lens, we will be able to each our students how God's providence and sovereignty are always at work. When kids are taught history from a Christian perspective, they'll see the development of civilizations, the rise of empires, wars between world powers, and all of the events of history as a part of God's big plan.
Homework
Students will be assigned homework. Please check and sign your
child’s calendar daily to make sure all assignments are completed.
