AfroQuiz is our annual Jeopardy-style quiz competition for kids of all ages, celebrating the rich history and achievements of people of African and Caribbean descent around the globe. Free and open to the community at large, AfroQuiz aims to instill a sense of pride and appreciation of Black history among the city’s youth.

Over 1250 students have participated, over 1250 books have been awarded and over 120 educational electronics have been awarded as top prizes (iPads, Chromebooks, tablets, gift cards and more!)

For the past 31 years, AfroQuiz has been a part of the fabric of Black History Month in Edmonton. AfroQuiz has given youth in the city aspirational figures in Black history to look up to and feel proud of their heritage. Each year, we strive to educate as many students as possible about the many wonderful contributions of people of African and Caribbean heritage to the world. AfroQuiz serves the youth of diverse cultural backgrounds in Edmonton and the greater community. 

As with Jeopardy, participants are given study material to review before the event and an opportunity to study with a group of students in AfroCademy. 

AfroCademy is a cohort learning experience that teaches valuable study skills in preparation for AfroQuiz.

AfroCademy will offer in-person sessions that incorporate study skills, test prep, music, movement, and food for a truly fun and immersive learning experience. Students will meet the other students in their Kingdom and make friends as they learn amazing content.  Students earn points by studying weekly and submitting AfroWow projects about something they learned that was intriguing to them. These points help us determine the winning AfroQuiz Kingdom for the group prizes, and also adds to individual points.

AfroCademy is held on the three Saturdays leading up to AfroQuiz.
