What are the four main elements of Responsive Teaching?

In-person? Hybrid? Virtual? As long as we implement these four main elements, we are ensuring student success.

Clear Expectations

Clear expectations need to be set from the very beginning of the school year, no matter the learning model. With a school year that is ever changing, it can make this more difficult because there might be different expectations for each model in which we are teaching. What is important to remember when implementing responsive practices is that we as teachers need to make sure that the expectations we set, can be altered or shifted no matter how we are teaching. They need to be able to be adapted to suit the situation that we are in.

Community and Connection

Students spend most of their time in classrooms throughout the week. No matter the experiences they have encountered, the one constant in their lives should be the way they feel in the classroom. Creating a classroom environment where students can feel safe, comfortable, welcome, and connected is an important element of implementing responsive teaching practices. When having a connection with your students, and creating a supportive classroom environment for them, they will strive socially, emotionally, and academically.

Equal Access

Another important element to consider as a classroom teacher, and more specifically with keeping responsive teaching practices in mind, is ensuring that all students have equal access to all materials and resources. With the constant altering of instruction this school year, this has been one of the most difficult elements to implement. As an educator, giving students equal access to all materials and resources is a priority. Having equal access means that we are providing the same resources and opportunities for students in the classroom.

Teacher as the Facilitator

One of the most important elements of responsive teaching is the idea that the teacher should only be a facilitator and that the classroom should be student-centered. When the teacher is the facilitator in the classroom, students feel they have more responsibility in their learning. Supporting and continuing this element throughout all models of learning can be difficult, especially when teaching virtually, but it’s so important to keep in mind and continue striving for.
