Main Learning Models

When the pandemic started, we had no idea what school was going to look like. How long would we be out? Will we have to wear masks? How am I going to address the needs of all students? Teaching on ZOOM? These were questions we were all thinking as educators.

Remote

The summer prior to the 2020-21 school year, all educators were sitting at the edge of their seats anxious to know how we would be starting the year. In my school district, the first two weeks of school were professional development days for us to prepare. The following two weeks would be completely virtual. My head was spinning trying to imagine how I would teach 16 students on a platform that we weren't familiar with. I kept a positive attitude.

Keeping all of the elements of responsive teaching in mind each day was a challenge, but we made it through. We were resilient.

Hybrid

After the two weeks of virtual, our district was moving to hybrid. We had finally become familiar with a schedule, but now I have to teach half the students in the classroom and the other half on ZOOM? Staying positive was my goal. The first hybrid day started, and it was overwhelming but manageable. Implementing classroom procedures, remembering that there are still students relying on me on the computer and in the classroom. I kept my head up.

Keeping all of the elements of responsive teaching in mind each day was a challenge, but we made it through. We were resilient.

In-Person

We were in Hybrid learning for several months, but then numbers got too high. We returned to virtual for 8 more weeks. After those 8 weeks? We went back to Hybrid. Finally, moving to in person learning was in sight, but by this time, it's April. Only three months left of this school year journey. How will in person go? My students haven't been together as one class in over a year. It's going to feel like the first day of school all over again. Navigating safety protocols, managing and implementing new classroom routines. I am doing it for my students.

Keeping all of the elements of responsive teaching in mind each day was a challenge, but we made it through.
