Mark Kilroy Foundation $4,000 Scholarship

for College or Trade or Technical School

The Mark Kilroy Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of substance abuse.  Drug addiction starts with the casual or recreational use of drugs.  One of our foundation goals is to unite the youth against all uses of illegal drugs.

We encourage ALL high school seniors and graduates, and GEDs to apply.  The Mark Kilroy Foundation will award scholarships to graduating seniors, graduates or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency (TXCHSE) from Galveston and Brazoria County, Texas High Schools, (i.e. currently serving Santa Fe, Alvin, Angleton, Arcadia, Ball, Brazosport, Brazoswood, Columbia, Danbury, Dickinson, Hitchcock, La Marque, Manvel, O’Connell, Sweeny, and Texas City), who will attend Texas accredited college or trade or technical schools.  Each scholarship totaling $4,000 will be paid over four years based on academic performance and completed semester hours.  Be sure to indicate if you earned dual credit, received your associate’s college degree while in high school, and your trade or technical school requirements.  For awarded scholarships, we will review your application and estimated yearly expenses, and determine if your scholarship warrants a payment increase based on your anticipated completion of a college degree, or trade or technical school certificate that is less than four years so your completion time could be less.

Scholarship Information and Eligibility Requirements

We accept scholarship applications when you become a Santa Fe, Alvin, Angleton, Arcadia, Ball, Brazosport, Brazoswood, Columbia, Danbury, Dickinson, Hitchcock, La Marque, Manvel, O’Connell, Sweeny, and Texas City High School senior and graduates or TXCHSE , i.e. GED from these high schools.  High School graduates awarded this scholarship will receive the initial payment of $500 at the beginning of the Fall or Spring semesters and additional payments at the beginning of each following semester after ALL required documents are submitted to the Mark Kilroy Foundation.  There is no age limitation if you meet our eligibility requirements to apply.

1.      To receive the first $500 of the scholarship funds, the student will be required to submit an official copy of their Texas accredited college or trade or technical school registration for the Fall or Spring semester to the Mark Kilroy Foundation plus application requirements.

2.      To receive your second $500 and future payments of your scholarship funds, the student will be required to submit official copies of their previous Texas accredited college or trade/technical school semester transcripts reflecting grades and completed courses, and their next semester paid registration to the Mark Kilroy Foundation.  Pending registrations will not be accepted.

3.      Student must be enrolled and complete a minimum of 12 semester hours, or other agreed upon hours and requirements for trade or technical schools; and maintain a grade point average (GPA) per semester of 2.5 or better based on a 4.0 grading system.

4.      Scholarships renewals will be Spring and Fall semesters with $500 per semester over four years up to $4,000 or an agreed upon amount and time period.

REQUIRED ANTI-DRUG ESSAY

We are very interested in your thoughts about drug use among youth.  As a part of your scholarship application, please provide careful consideration for this problem.  Write your thoughts and opinions about preventing students in your school or others you know or knew from trying or using illegal drugs.  For those you know at school or other places that use any illegal drugs, consider why and how they started using.  What could have prevented that person from starting?

The Mark Kilroy Foundation will not judge you or others you know that were involved in drug use.  Your essay is a critical part of being awarded a Mark Kilroy Foundation Scholarship so be sure to write a clear and concise statement in your own words.

Include any of your community volunteer activities with a summary of your yearly dates of activities, (i.e. school car wash fundraiser, nursing home visits, disaster recovery, food banks, meals on wheels, free tax preparation assistance, homeless shelters, school and charity events and fundraisers, church activities/missions, Boys & Girls Clubs, anti-drug activities and other activities where you help someone in need especially disadvantaged).  It is never too late to start volunteering if you have no activities since volunteering is very important to the Mark Kilroy Foundation.

Letter(s) of recommendation are optional but highly recommended to submit with your application for the MKF Scholarships Committee to consider in making their decision.  Feel free to submit additional details and documents if you are disadvantaged and/or have life challenges since your information will definitely be considered when making a decision.

Community service, letters of recommendation and other information submitted are optional but highly recommended.  Your entire scholarship application package submitted as a whole will be considered.  Income, scholarships, student loans, financial aid, parent or grandparent assistance, etc. will not disqualify an applicant from being awarded our scholarship.
