Why are we doing this?
We all have a role to play in embedding sustainability in our work activities. And Production is no different. It starts in the pre-production phase, in the early stages of development, and continues to the end - post production, distribution (where applicable) and into future seasons.
It involves us all - one person can’t make a production sustainable alone.
Promoting a Sustainable Production
Our intention is to produce and license content without doing harm, while advancing sustainable production in Canada.
But where do we begin?
Start by Spreading the Message:
Name a sustainability champion on your production to help lead the way
Share your commitment:
Communicate your goals
Share best practices and carry them into the next season or production
Organize regular follow up / updates to make your green efforts part of the routine
Discuss sustainability at every production meeting
Display signage on set and in production offices to promote sustainable behaviours
Share green achievements with your team, with your audience.
Recognize that Green Work Takes Teamwork:
Engage your production team from the pre-production stage
Discuss sustainability at every production meeting
Delegate tasks and share environmental related responsibilities
Share regular updates to make your green efforts part of the routine
Work with organizations, including vendors and suppliers, that have a clear commitment to the environment and sustainable practices
Follow the 5 R’s:
Refuse - avoid creating unnecessary waste
Reuse - rent instead of buy; swap single use items for reusable ones
Repurpose - find new uses for things or donate them
Repair - could save your production money, while reducing waste
Recycle or compost instead of dump
And Remember We are Proud to Play Our Part:
Measure your footprint by calculating your emissions
Consider all your activities (from pre to post production) and manage them to prevent impact on the environment. Ask yourself:
What are we doing?
How are we doing it?
Is there a better way?
Can I make a change that will reduce our footprint?
Set clear goals (e.g. zero waste) and monitor actions (e.g. waste diversion) to ensure these targets are met
Where possible, use products made with greener materials (e.g. high recycled content; sustainable; free trade; green certification, etc.)
Remember:
It’s not about cutting back on our productions, content or budget. It’s not about being perfect.
It's about changing our daily habits. It’s about doing things differently with a green mindset.
It’s about having a positive influence on our teams, our colleagues and our audience.
It’s about looking for better ways to do things both for the environment and ultimately for our productions as a whole.
