Our Profile of a Colonel evidence/artifact collection tool was developed. Every student in the district is assigned a digital binder in a Shared Google Drive. Students are expected to upload evidence/artifacts for each of the indicators that fall under our 5 Competencies.
We chose Google Slides as the platform for building our Digital Binder because it is a cost-free, accessible tool that is easy for both teachers and students to use. Since our teachers and students were already familiar with Google Slides, there was little need for additional training or support. The platform also makes it easy to organize and house all of the Digital Binder materials in one central location while allowing us to quickly make copies and distribute them to all of our students. Overall, Google Slides provided a familiar, user-friendly, and efficient platform that met our needs without adding additional costs.
The Rollout
The Caverna Independent School District began the rollout process of the Profile of a Colonel in 2022. We started with training all of the teachers and staff on the implementation of our Digital Binder collection tool. Our "soft rollout" expectation was that all students in grades K-12 would upload one piece of evidence for each of the 5 Competencies: Communicator, Collaborator, Innovator, Self-Directed, & Civic/Globally Minded.
At the end of the 2022 school year, as a district, we reflected on the process and implementation. We used the feedback from the rollout process to refine our system and expectations along with the evidence collection process and defense presentations.
In 2023, the school district refined the systems that we had in place. Revisions were made to refine our student defense system to ensure that it was effective for students and efficient for everyone.
In the 2023-2024 school year, we completed teacher refresher trainings to prepare them for a more in-depth rollout and implementation of our Student Defense Presentation system/process.
In the Spring of 2024, our district revised resources. Revisions were made to our resources on documents pertaining to the Profile of a Colonel Digital Binder and Defenses. We revamped rubrics, staff resources, important dates, etc.)
2024-2025 CIS worked on the development of our strategic plan with aspirations tied to our mission, vision, and core values. The aspirations also aligned with the competencies in our Profile of a Colonel as well.
In 2025-2026, CIS determined the local accountability measures most important to students, staff, and stakeholders through in-house collaboration and an outside agency, Nexus. Some staff worked to build the local accountability dashboard around the strategic plan, Profile of a Colonel, and local indicators of quality.
In the Summer of 2026, district staff gathered feedback from staff and stakeholders after sharing a sample of the local accountability dashboard.
In 2026-2027, the Caverna Board of Education were presented with the Local Indicators of Quality and the Local Accountability Dashboard were presented and approved.
