Do not leave this classroom until you are given permission to do so. Leaving early will remove any work you have submitted.
Choose ONE book from below to read. You will be using this book for your research paper at the start of school. Make sure you can find scholarly journals to use for research BEFORE you choose your novel. Before making your final choice, be sure you research the novel to make sure it is one you and your guardians will be pleased you are reading. Amazon Reviews, Common Sense Media Reviews, and reading the first chapter of the book could prove to be useful in making your decision. YOU MAY NOT CHOOSE A NOVEL THAT YOU HAVE READ PREVIOUSLY.
YOU ALSO CANNOT USE HAMLET, WUTHERING HEIGHTS, EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE, DEATH OF A SALESMAN OR THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST.
(Click the photos below to take you to the book's Amazon site. Excerpts for each book are also linked below the images.)
Students, plagiarism is defined as the passing off of another's words or ideas as your own. Be mindful that all assignments reflect your own original thoughts. All submissions will pass through AI/plagiarism detection software. Writing assignments are not just about the final product; they're also about engaging with the learning experience. Work which is plagiarized in any way will receive a zero, and the student will face disciplinary action.
Choose a book from the choices above. Any book of literary merit will work. I will caution you that it is more difficult to find journal articles over more recent books.
Read the novel and complete the research planning assignment.
Look for two scholarly journals about your book. There are suggestions of places to look on Google Classroom.
When you're done, turn in the planning guide on the Google Classroom assignment.
Move to the second part: Hamlet.
Due: August 1, 2025 BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS
Choose a modern translation of Hamlet to read. The purpose is for you to know and understand the plot of the play. This will make it easier for us to study the play when class starts. There is a link some translations in Google classroom if you do not want to purchase a book.
As you are reading the play, complete the act summaries in Google Classroom. Complete this and turn it in by the due date.
In the first weeks of class, we will read the play in the original and study important lines. The test will occur in class after our study of the play.
