Humans depend on the earth and the environment for survival, yet we seem intent on destroying it. The Environmental Action Team (EAT) aims to advance sustainability at Catlin Gabel through systemic change in collaboration with the student body, faculty, and administration.
In May of 2017, the Catlin Gabel Gabel School Environmental Advisory Council (EAC), made up of teachers, administrators, students, staff, alumni, and parents, presented a summary report of their findings about NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) best practices surrounding sustainability. They also provided Tim and the Board of Trustees with a recommended plan of action for the next school year (2017-18) to follow these best practices.
This group evolved into the Sustainability Team and included both students and school staff to advise the Board of Trustees and the Head and Assistant Head of Catlin Gabel on sustainability. High School students decided to extend this work by creating an Upper School club, the Environmental Action Team! A Middle School Environmental Action Team was started in 2021 as well.
EAT is open to anyone interested---we hold meetings in Pauling every Monday during Early Co-Cu (11:05 - 11:35) and Thursdays during Early Co-Cu (11:25 - 11:55).
If you're interested in joining, come to a meeting or send us an email at EAT@catlin.edu to be added to the email list and receive weekly meeting reminders with a climate meme!

The Catlin Gabel Tiny Forest stands on the territory of the Tualatin Kalapuya (Atfalati) people, who are members of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. The Portland Metro Area includes lands of Kalapuya, Multnomah, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Chinook, Molalla, and other peoples. We want to show respect to those whose territory we are on, and understand that a land acknowledgement is not an action step towards justice for Native Americans.
