In this lesson students will be introduced to the topic by learning that activism is much more than what is often thought of as protests and campaigns. This lesson will give students a brief overview of the history of protest art and which forms it can take.
Students will be introduced to portraiture and will understand how the artists use their skills and techniques to create a portrait or self-portrait to raise awareness about a social, political or civic issue.
Students will be introduced to protest music and will learn how the musicians and song writers use their words and musical arrangements to create performances to paint a picture, draw in the audience, or make a commentary on social, political or civic issues.
Students will be introduced to Spoken Word performance poetry and will understand how the artists use their words and performance to paint a picture, draw in the audience, and make a commentary on social, political or civic issues.
In this section students will be challenged to put into action what they have learned in this unit to help solve a social justice issue and make a difference in their school, community, and/or the world.
