Prayer for Pastoral Care for The Elderly

Heavenly Father as we come into your Presence,

Send us your Holy Spirit to give:-

Our mind wisdom and grace,

Our eyes light to see those in need,

Our ears the ability to listen,

Our lips words of comfort,

Our hands your healing touch,

Our feet to walk this earth to seek those in need.

Lord, help us to manifest your goodness, kindness and gentleness.

Let your love shine through all that we say and do

so that those in need may hear and feel you.

Thank you, Lord for choosing us for this special Ministry

to follow your footsteps to serve you

in our sick and elderly brothers and sisters.

Grant us your love, peace and good health

and help us to persevere in our ministry.

We ask this in Jesus name. Amen.

St Mary of the Angels,

... Pray for us.

PSALMS

PSALM 1 (True Happiness)

Happy are those who reject the advice of evil people,

Who do not follow the example of sinners

Or join those who have no use for God.

Instead, they find joy in obeying the Law of the Lord,

And they study it day and night.

They are like trees that grow beside a stream,

That bear fruit at the right time, and whose leaves do not dry up.

They succeed in everything they do.

But evil people are not like this at all;

They are like straw that the wind blows away.

Sinners will be condemned by God and kept apart from God's own people.

The righteous are guided and protected by the Lord,

But the evil are on the way to their doom.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 4 (Prayer for Help)

Answer me when I pray, O God, my defender.

When I was in trouble, you helped me.

Be kind to me now and hear my prayer.

How long will you people insult me?

How long will you love what is worthless and go after what is false?

Remember that the Lord has chosen the righteous for his own,

and he hears me when I call to him.

Tremble with fear and stop sinning; think deeply about this,

When you lie in silence on your beds.

Offer the right sacrifices to the Lord, and put your trust in Him.

There are many who pray: "Give us more blessings, O Lord.

Look on us with kindness!"

But the joy that you have given me is more than they will ever have with all their

grain and wine.

PAGE 8

When I lie down, I go to sleep in peace you alone,

O Lord, keep me perfectly safe.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 5 (A Prayer for Protection)

Listen to my words, O Lord, and hear my sighs.

Listen to my cry for help, my God and king!

I pray to you, O Lord; you hear my voice in the morning,

At sunrise I offer my prayer and wait for your answer.

You are not a God who is pleased with wrongdoing;

You allow no evil in your presence.

You cannot stand the sight of the proud; you hate all wicked people.

You destroy all liars and despise violent, deceitful people.

But because of your great love I can come into your house;

I can worship in your holy Temple and bow down to you in reverence.

Lord, I have so many enemies!

Lead me to do your will;

And make your way plain for me to follow.

What my enemies say can never be trusted, they only want to destroy.

Their words are flattering and smooth, but full of deadly deceit.

Condemn and punish them, O God;

may their own plots cause their ruin.

Drive them out of your presence because of their many sins

and their rebellion against you.

But all who find safety in you will rejoice;

They can always sing for joy.

Protect those who love you, because of you they are truly happy.

You bless those who obey you, Lord;

Your love protects them like a shield.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 13 (A Prayer for Help)

How much longer will you forget me, Lord? Forever?

How much longer will you hide yourself from me?

PAGE 9

How long must I endure trouble?

How long will sorrow fill my heart day and night?

How long will my enemies triumph over me?

Look at me, O Lord my God, and answer me.

Restore my strength, don't let me die.

Don't let my enemies say, "We have defeated him."

Don't let them gloat over my downfall.

I rely on your constant love;

I will be glad, because you will rescue me

I will sing to you, O Lord, because you have been good to me.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 15 (What God Requires)

Lord, who may enter your Temple?

Who may worship on Zion, your sacred hill?

Those who obey God in everything and always do what is right,

Whose words are true and sincere,

and who do not slander others.

They do no wrong to their friends

nor spread rumours about their neighbours.

They despise those whom God rejects,

but honour those who obey the Lord.

They always do what they promise,

no matter how much it may cost.

They make loans without charging interest

And cannot be bribed to testify against the innocent.

Whoever does these things will always be secure.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 42 (Prayer of Someone In Exile)

As a deer longs for a stream of cool water,

So I long for you, O God. I thirst for you, the living God.

When can I go and worship in your presence?

PAGE 10

Day and night I cry, and tears are my only food;

All the time my enemies ask me, "Where is your God?"

My heart breaks when I remember the past,

When I went with the crowds to the house of God

And led them as they walked along,

A happy crowd, singing and shouting praises to God.

Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled?

I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him,

my saviour and my God.

Here in exile my heart is breaking, and so I turn my thoughts to Him.

He has sent waves of sorrow over my soul;

Chaos roars at me like a flood, like waterfalls thundering down to the Jordan

From Mount Hermon and Mount Mizar.

May the Lord show His constant love during the day

So that I may have a song at night,

A prayer to the God of my life.

To God, my defender, I say, "Why have you forgotten me?"

Why must I go on suffering from the cruelty of my enemies?"

I am crushed by their insults, as they keep on asking me, "Where is your God?"

Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled?

I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him

My saviour and my God.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

PSALM 51 (A Prayer for Forgiveness)

Be merciful to me, O God, because of your constant love.

Because of your great mercy wipe away my sins!

Wash away all my evil and make me clean from my sin!

I recognize my faults; I am always conscious of my sins.

I have sinned against you - only against you

And done what you consider evil.

So you are right in judging me; you are justified in condemning me.

I have been evil from the day I was born;

From the time I was conceived, I have been sinful.

Sincerity and truth are what you require; fill my mind with your wisdom.

Remove my sin, and I will be clean;

PAGE 11

Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Let me hear the sounds of joy and gladness;

and though you have crushed me and broken me

I will be happy once again.

Close your eyes to my sins and wipe out all my evil.

Create a pure heart in me, O God,

And put a new and loyal spirit in me.

Do not banish me from your presence;

Do not take your holy spirit away from me.

Give me again the joy that comes from your salvation,

And make me willing to obey you.

Then I will teach sinners your commands,

And they will turn back to you.

Spare my life, O God, and save me,

And I will gladly proclaim your righteousness.

Help me to speak, Lord, and I will praise you.

You do not want sacrifices, or I would offer them;

You are not pleased with burnt offerings.

My sacrifice is humble spirit, O God;

You will not reject a humble and repentant heart.

O God, be kind to Zion and help her;

Rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

Then you will be pleased with proper sacrifices and with your burnt offerings;

And bulls will be sacrificed on your alter.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 54 (A Prayer for Protection from Enemies)

Save me by your power, O God; set me free by your might!

Hear my prayer, O God; listen to my words!

Proud people are coming to attack me;

Cruel people are trying to kill me - those who do not care about God.

But God is my helper. The Lord is my defender.

May God use their own evil to punish my enemies.

He will destroy them because he is faithful.

I will gladly offer you a sacrifice, O Lord;

I will give you thanks because you are good.

You have rescued me from all my troubles.

And I have seen my enemies defeated.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 61 (A Prayer for Protection)

Hear my cry, O God;

Listen to my prayer!

In despair and far from home I call to you!

Take me to safe refuge, for you are my protector

My strong defense against my enemies.

Let me live in your sanctuary all my life;

Let me find safety under your wings.

You have heard my promises, O God,

And you have given me what belongs to those who honour you.

Add many years to the king's life;

Let him live on and on!

May he rule forever in your presence, O God;

Protect him with your constant love and faithfulness.

So I will always sing praises to you,

As I offer you daily what I have promised.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 67 (A Song of Thanksgiving)

God, be merciful to us and bless us;

look on us with kindness,

So that the whole world may know your will;

So that all nations may know your salvation.

May the peoples praise you, O God;

may all the peoples praise you!

May the nations be glad and sing for joy,

Because you judge the peoples with justice

And guide every nation on earth.

May the peoples praise you, O God;

may all the peoples praise you!

The land has produced its harvest;

God,

Our God has blessed us.

God has blessed us;

May all people everywhere honour Him.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 84 (Longing for God's House)

How I love your Temple, Lord Almighty!

How I want to be there!

I long to be in the Lord's Temple.

With my whole being I sing for joy to the living God.

Even the sparrows have built a nest,

And the swallows have their own home;

They keep their young near your altars,

Lord Almighty, my king and my God.

How happy are those who live in your Temple,

always singing praise to you.

How happy are those whose strength comes from you,

Who are eager to make the pilgrimage to Mount Zion.

As they pass through the dry valley of Baca.

It becomes a place of springs' the autumn rain fills it with pools.

They grow stronger as they go; they will see the God of gods on Zion.

Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty,

Listen, O God of Jacob!

Bless our king, O God, the king you have chosen.

One day spent in your Temple is better than a thousand anywhere else.

I would rather stand at the gate of the house of my God

than live in the homes of the wicked.

The Lord is our protector and glorious king,

Blessing us with kindness and honour.

He does not refuse any good thing to those who do what is right.

Lord Almighty, how happy are those who trust in you!

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 95 (A Song of Praise)

Come, let us praise the Lord!

Let us sing for joy to God, who protects us!

Let us come before Him with thanksgiving

And sing joyful songs of praise.

For the Lord is a mighty God, a mighty king over all the gods.

He rules over the whole earth,

From the deepest caves to the highest hills.

He rules over the sea, which he made;

the land also, which he himself formed.

Come, let us bow down and worship him; let us kneel before the Lord, our maker!

He is our God' we are the people he cares for,

The flock for which he provides.

Listen today to what he says:

"Don't be stubborn, as your ancestors were at Meribah,

As they were that day in the desert at Massah.

There they put me to the test and tried me,

Although they had seen what I did for them

For forty years I was disgusted with those people.

I said, "How disloyal they are!

They refuse to obey my commands.

I was angry and made a solemn promise:

"You will never enter the land where I would have given you rest".

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 111 (In Praise of The Lord)

Praise the Lord!

With all my heart I will thank the Lord

In the assembly of his people.

How wonderful are the things the Lord does! All who are delighted with them want to understand them.

All he does is full of honour and majesty; His righteousness is eternal.

The Lord does not let us forget his wonderful actions;

PAGE 15

He has shown his power to his people by giving them the lands of foreigners.

In all he does he is faithful and just; All his commands are dependable.

They last for all time;

they were given in truth and righteousness.

He set his people free and made an eternal covenant with them

Holy and mighty is he!

The way to become wise is to honour the Lord;

He gives sound judgment to all who obey his commands,

He is to be praised forever.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 130 (A Prayer for Help)

From the depths of my despair I call to you, Lord.

Hear my cry, O Lord; Listen to my call for help!

If you kept a record of our sins, who could escape being condemned?

But you forgive us, so that we should stand in awe of you.

I wait eagerly for the Lord's help, and in his word I trust.

I wait for the Lord more eagerly than sentries wait for the dawn -

Than sentries wait for the dawn.

Israel, trust in the Lord, because His love is constant and He is always willing to save.

He will save His people Israel from all their sins.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 142 (A Prayer for Help)

I call to the Lord for help; I plead with Him.

I bring Him all my complaints; I tell Him all my troubles.

When I am ready to give up, He knows what I

Lord, I cry to you for help; you, Lord are my protector;

You are all I want in this life.

Listen to my cry for help, for I am sunk in despair.

Save me from my enemies;

they are too strong for me.

Set me free from my distress;

Then in the assembly of your people I will praise you because of your goodness to me.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 8 (God's Glory and Human Dignity)

O Lord, our Lord, your greatness is seen in all the world!

Your praise reaches up to the heavens; it is sung by children and babies.

You are safe and secure from all your enemies; you stop anyone who opposes you.

When I look at the sky, which you have made, at the moon and the stars, which you set in their places

what are human beings, that you think of them;

May the Lord answer all your requests.

Now I know that the Lord gives victory to his chosen king;

he answers him from his holy heaven and by his power gives him great victories.

Some trust in their war chariots and other in their horses, but we trust in the power of the Lord our God.

Such people will stumble and fall, but we will rise and stand firm.

Give victory to the king, O Lord;

answer us when we call.

All say together:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PSALM 23 (The Lord Our Shepherd)

The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need.

He lets me rest in fields of green grass and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water.

He gives me new strength. He guides me in the right paths, as he has promised.

1) A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (Mt 6: 19-21)

All say: Glory to you Lord.

Do not store up riches for yourselves here on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and robbers break in and steal.

For your heart will always be where your riches are.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

So do not start worrying: 'Where will my food come from? Or my drink? Or my clothes?'

(These are the things the pagans are always concerned about).

Your Father in heaven knows that you need all these things.

Instead, be concerned above everything else with the Kingdom of God and with what He requires of you, and He will provide you with all these other things.

There is no need to add to the troubles each day brings.

Amazing Grace

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound,

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found.

Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears relieved.

How precious did that grace appear,

The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils and snares,

I have already come.

'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,

His Word my hope secures;

He will my shield and...

MARIAN HYMNS

Mother Dear Oh Pray For Me

Mother dear, Oh pray for me

Whilst far from heaven and thee,

I wander in a fragile bark

O'er life's tempestuous sea

O Virgin Mother, from thy throne

So bright in bliss above

Protect thy child, and cheer my path

With thy sweet smile of love

Chorus

Mother dear, Oh pray for me

And never cease thy care

Till in heaven eternally

Thy love and bliss I share

On This Day, O Beautiful Mother

Chorus

On this day, O beautiful Mother

On this day, we give thee our love

Near thee, Madonna, fondly we hover

Trusting thy gentle care to prove.

On this day we ask to share

Dearest Mother thy sweet care

Aid us ere our feet astray

Wander from thy guiding way.

Queen of angels deign to hear

Lisping children's humble prayer

Young hearts gain, O Virgin pure Sweet...

Hail Mary: Gentle Woman

Chorus

Gentle woman, quiet light

Morning star, so strong and bright

Gentle Mother, peaceful dove

Teach us wisdom, teach us love.

You were chosen by the Father

You were chosen for the Son

You were chosen from all women

And for woman, shinning one.

Blessed are you, among women

Blest in turn, all women too

Blessed they, with peaceful spirits

Blessed they, with gentle hearts.

Mary's Song

My soul doth glory in your love. O Lord (2x).

For you gazed on your servant with compassion

And you reached out and took me by the hand.

Great are you God, and holy is your name

Your mercy reaches to the end of time.

Ah, the lowly you raise to the heavens

And the proud hearted have no part with you.

Ah, how you fill the hungry with your love

With empty hands the rich are sent away

You will always be mindful of your mercy

As you promised your people long ago.

My soul doth glory in your love, O Lord (2x).

For you smiled on your servant with compassion,

And you reached out and took me by the hand.

As I Kneel Before You

As I kneel before you

As I bow my head in prayer

Take this day, make it yours

And fill me with your love

Chorus

Ave Maria
