Congratulations on finally making it to your Senior year!!!  Although this year should be full of fun, you need to make sure you take the appropriate steps to keep on track for your future!

Going to College in 5 Easy Steps!

Remember to stay successful with good attendance, staying on top of your academics, and appropriate citizenship!

Start thinking about your plans after high school:

      1) Work-  apply for jobs

      2) Military- talk with recruiters who visit during lunch or visit the local recruiting station

      3) College- consider 2 year vs. 4 year options

If planning to attend a 4 year college or university, we recommend visiting the college/university by scheduling a tour or visiting during an Open House.  Juniors and Seniors are allowed three college day visits per year with the absence not counting against their attendance.  The appropriate form can be located in the Counseling Office or on the left side of the Counseling webpage, titled "College Day Form."  Additional research on North Carolina schools can be completed with CFNC.org

Once you decide the schools to which you want to apply, APPLY!  You will apply either directly through the school's website, with CommonApp or Coalition College, or through CFNC.  Every college/university is different. You must read. Click here for a link to admission deadlines and Open Houses for all colleges in North Carolina.

Once you have completed the admissions application, official test scores will need to be sent.  Test scores must be ordered directly from College Board and/or ACT.  For all colleges in NC, an official transcript should be sent electronically using the transcript manager on CFNC, SendEDU, CommonApp, or Coalition College. Students must read to make sure they understand how the transcript should be sent. If neither of these options are available, a paper copy can be sent. To request a paper copy, the student should sign up on the clipboard in Student Services. The official transcript will be returned to you for mailing.

The next step is to start looking for scholarships.  The first place to start is our scholarship website. We will list any scholarship that our office receives. Although the large internet scholarship databases will generate extra email, they can be a valuable resource.  We also recommend checking with clubs, civic groups/organizations, churches, and with your employer.  Bandys will host a Financial Aid/Senior Parent 101 Workshop on Wednesday, October 17 at 6:00pm. Skip Watts from CFNC will present on financial aid, including the FAFSA. Afterward, the BHS counselors will cover more in-depth information on college applications, recommendations, scholarships, etc....  The entire program will last approximately 2 hours.
