The Drumline is made up of two sections. The Battery (commonly called a Drumline) consists of the players marching on the field. The Front Ensemble (or Pit) are the percussionists on the front sideline. The Front Ens. is considered to be a part of the drumline and they rehearse together often. Students who play double-reed instruments are invited to join the drumline in the fall since their instruments do not march on the field. The Drumline plays with the CHS Lion Band as well as performs independently at various contests and community events.
Students in the percussion studio have multiple opportunities throughout the year to perform or compete as solo instrumentalists. In the fall they compete in the All-Region/District/State contests, and in the spring they may compete in solo competition. There are also solo contests associate with drumline competitions and at the PASIC. There is also an opportunity to perform solo works at the Percussion Concert held in the spring.
Throughout the year, percussionists at all levels participate in percussion ensembles. These groups play music and repertoire that showcase the varying instruments that fall under the percussion category. Ensembles may consist of keyboards, drums, or a combination of both. Students also have the opportunity to perform in/compete with small ensembles such as duets, trios, or quartets without the assistance of their director. Percussion Ensembles compete at various competitions and may be showcased at the Percussion Concert or other concerts held during the year.
