Dear Faculty and research staff,
In preparation for research on SARS-CoV2 to get underway, the Biosafety Committee of the COVID19 Working Group has prepared safety guidelines on the use of infected patient samples in research. Please review these carefully as you prepare your own lab-specific procedures and update your Exposure Control Plans for your laboratory and Environmental Health & Safety. All experimental protocols that involve SARS-CoV2 must be reviewed by CWRU Environmental Health & Safety for approval. Additionally, be sure to contact EHS to have your laboratory space assessed and approved for SARS-CoV2 work.
Any laboratory wishing to receive samples for BEI under BSL2 or BSL3 containment conditions will be responsible for submitting their own registration information. To reduce some of the administrative burden these forms are attached and pre-populated with any general information. Contact Environmental Health & Safety to review and sign-off on the BSL2 checklist after a member of your laboratory staff has completed Section C (biosafety cabinet use) of this form. An assessment of the laboratory can be accomplished virtually if needed to expedite the process.
Any projects that will use an isolated virus or BAL samples, or that involve the potential propagation of SARS-CoV2, will need to be performed under BSL3 containment and is subject to review and approval of the BSL3 Advisory Committee.
