New Quizzes

Migrate Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes

You can tell the difference at a glance because the Classic Quizzes have an "unfilled" rocket ship and New Quizzes have a "filled" rocket ship.

To migrate your quizzes, open your course, click on Quizzes in the navigation bar, find your Classic quiz, click the three dots and select migrate. Done!

Here's a link to the written directions with pictures if you need it.

Canvas Quizzes Tutorial from Canvas!

Please use New Quizzes! Classic quizzes will be sunsetted this summer so if you want to use a quiz next year, please make it in New Quizzes or you'll have to migrate your quiz over the summer.

The part you'll want to see starts at 15:40

Canvas New Quizzes will become the default quiz feature, replacing the Classic Quizzes at some point in the future.

There are a few things that New Quizzes cannot currently do. One is give partial credit for questions. For a full list of comparisons, you can check out this site:  https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-12115-new-quizzes-feature-comparison  (scroll down, the first 2 sections aren't as helpful for teachers)

Also, one thing that really bothers me is grading a new quiz does not show up in the teacher to-do list. I struggled to keep up on grading new quizzes for my classes this past spring because I didn't realize how dependent I was on the to-do list.

This is an overview of some getting started with the features of the New Quizzes. I mention some things that I don't like so that you'll know some things to look out for.

FAQs

You can find Canvas FAQs HERE. They are very helpful. The one thing that drives me crazy about New Quizzes is that when quizzes need grading, they do not show up in the to-do list. It's explained below.

Why are ungraded assessments not shown in the To Do List?

LTI supports grade passback but does not provide a way to offer further context about the assessment. Without the ability to provide additional context, Canvas cannot distinguish if the lack of a grade or the passed grade represents the fully graded contents of the quiz. This leaves the To Do List with no way to manage New Quizzes LTI assignments.
