Overview
Students create text-based dialog scenes in Scratch using words from our class vocabulary lists. In follow up projects, students add their own recorded voices, narrating each line of dialog, in Spanish as well (in the final project) in English.
Goals
Help students develop Spanish vocabulary
Provide opportunities for students to use new vocabulary words in a meaningful context
Develop computational thinking skills alongside language skills in integrated, fun activities
Create "durable learning experiences" for students in Spanish class
Example Scratch Projects
Text Only: Spanish Dialog - Going to the Car Race
With Audio Narration:
With Text & Audio Narration in BOTH English & Spanish: "El Sueño de Miguel"
Preparation
Help students setup personal Scratch accounts using their school email addresses. Ask them to save their userID and password for Scratch in their "Password Keeper" Google Sheet.
Procedures
See Projects 1, 2 and 3 below
Extensions
Challenge students to remix classmates' projects, using some different required vocabulary and adding a surprise ending to the story.
Project 1 - Spanish Dialog in Scratch
1- View and study this example Scratch dialog project (press GREEN FLAG & SEE INSIDE) https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/422487716/
2- Review this video about how to make a dialog project in Scratch.
3- Use at least THREE vocabulary words from 1 of our Movie Talk lists in a Scratch Dialog Project https://mdtech.casady.org/spanish/vocabulary
4- Share the link to your Scratch Project here in Google Classroom and in Seesaw! https://app.seesaw.me/a/0083fa88-6a04-4c07-a0a7-a9d42f7258dd
Basic Example (Speech bubbles / text only, no audio narration)
Video: Make a "Dialog Project" in Scratch with Speech Bubbles (6 min, 49 sec)
Project 2 - Puppet Video & Narrated Scratch Animation
This is a fun, multi-part project in which you will MAKE A SHORT SPANISH DIALOG (with a partner, unless flex learning) and share it both as a recorded finger puppet video AND a narrated, animated Scratch Project.
STEP 1
With a partner (unless you are flex learning / learning at home) choose at least THREE WORDS from our Moana vocabulary list.
STEP 2
1 partner needs to CREATE A NEW GOOGLE DOC and share it with Dr. Fryer (via email) and your partner. Name it "Spanish Dialog" and put your names on it.
STEP 3
Write a short dialog (10 to 30 seconds long when you read it) that uses your THREE MOANA vocabulary words. Also some of our Spanish Question words and some of our "Super 7 Spanish verbs."
You can use Google Translate but keep your sentences SHORT and SIMPLE.
STEP 4
Use finger puppets and an iPad to record your dialog. Add your video to Seesaw. Here is an example, using the Green Screen app.
If you use a green screen and want Dr. Fryer to put a photo in the background, you can give instructions about the photo to use on your Dialog Google Doc. You can find a photo on Unsplash.com and include the link to the photo you want on your Google Doc, or describe the kind of photo you want and Dr. Fryer will pick one.
STEP 5
Use Scratch to create an animated and narrated version of your dialog. Use SPEECH BUBBLES to include your characters' dialog / sentences, AND record your voice saying each sentence from the dialog.
STEP 6
Share your Scratch project publicly, so you can:
Add it to our Scratch Spanish Projects Studio (link in Casady Bookmarks)
Turn in the link in via Google Classroom
Video: Add Voice Narration to a Scratch Project (5 min, 12 sec)
Advanced Example (with audio / voice narration)
Project 3 - Captioned & Narrated in Spanish & English
This project builds on the first two. Using a Google Slideshow as a template, students:
Select 2 or 3 characters from 7 in the movie Coco
Select 10 vocabulary words to use from our "movie talk" list of about 30
Write a dialog between their characters in English, then in Spanish
Add their dialog to a Scratch project template
Record their dialog in Scratch
Share their project to Seesaw
A COMPLETED PROJECT EXAMPLE IN SCRATCH (El Sueño de Miguel) and COMPLETED PLANNING SLIDESHOW are available.
