It's important to distinguish the difference between narrative and story. Story is the events and character actions within the game. Narrative is the method and structure in which that story is delivered to the player.
Narrative plays a pivotal role in games by providing context and motivation for players. A well-crafted story can captivate players and keep them invested in the game. Narratives give players reasons for their actions, making their gameplay experience more meaningful. A rich narrative can also make players feel like they are part of the game world.
Crafting a narrative in games is a much different experience when compared to other forms of media. Game designers need to consider interactivity. How does a player influence the story through their actions? Interactivity creates a sense of agency and personal investment. Designers may want the story to emerge from the gameplay itself, based on the player's decisions. This is called emergent storytelling. A big difference between games and other media is non-linearity. Games can offer branching narratives and multiple endings, providing different experiences for different players. Not all games need to be non-linear. They can follow a fixed path from beginning to end, like in traditional media. A good example of a linear story game is the Uncharted series. A good non-linear example is Detroit: Become Human.
