At Newport Middle School Library, we're always looking for innovative ways to inspire a love of reading in our students. Each year, we host a Book Tasting event that transforms our library into a bustling café of literary delights. This unique event provided our students with the opportunity to sample a variety of books, igniting their curiosity and passion for reading in a fun and interactive way.
Each table features a selection of books that spanned multiple genres and reading levels, ensuring that there was something for everyone. Students moved from table to table, spending a few minutes with each book, jotting down their thoughts and ratings on personalized tasting menus. This setup allowed them to explore different genres, discover new authors, and expand their reading horizons.
The feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive. Many discovered books they wouldn't have picked up on their own and were excited to continue reading their chosen titles. Teachers also noticed a boost in student engagement and enthusiasm for reading. By creating an environment that fosters exploration and curiosity, our Book Tasting event not only introduced students to new literary worlds but also reinforced the importance of reading for pleasure and knowledge.
Overall, our Book Tasting events are always a success, bringing the joy of reading to life in our school library. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future, continuing to cultivate a love of literature in our students and supporting their academic and personal growth. Stay tuned for more exciting activities and updates from Newport Middle School Library!
We are thrilled to share the outstanding achievements of Newport Middle School's Battle of the Books team! This talented group of students proudly wore their new sports jackets, purchased with the generous support of our community donors, as they competed in the 2023-2024 Battle of the Books competition. Their hard work, dedication, and love for reading shone brightly as they secured an impressive 2nd place finish. We couldn't be prouder of their accomplishments and the way they represented our school.
In our exciting 6th grade science unit on plate tectonics, students delved into the dynamic processes that shape our Earth's surface. The lesson began with an introduction to the fundamental concepts of plate tectonics, including the types of tectonic plates, their movements, and the geological phenomena they cause, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and the formation of mountains.
To bring these concepts to life, students created stop motion videos using modeling clay. This hands-on project allowed students to visually demonstrate the movement of tectonic plates and the resulting geological activities. Working in small groups, students molded clay to represent the Earth's crust and used stop motion techniques to animate the interactions between different types of plates—divergent, convergent, and transform boundaries.
Throughout the project, students practiced teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking as they planned, filmed, and edited their videos. The lesson concluded with a showcase of their stop motion animations, followed by a class discussion to reinforce the key concepts of plate tectonics and reflect on the learning experience.
This engaging and interactive approach not only helped students understand the mechanics of plate tectonics but also allowed them to develop valuable skills in collaboration and technology.
