In the second year of the course, you will be expected to complete a 1200-1600 word essay on any one of 6 titles prescribed by the IBO for each examination session (graduation year). The TOK essay is meant as an opportunity to explore, individually and in some depth, relationships between different areas of knowledge and the wider world. It is not, in particular, meant as a research essay, though preparation for the essay may include reference to relevant sources.
The TOK Essay will be submitted electronically and assessed by an examiner somewhere else, based on a global impression marking system that we will discuss in more detail as we begin the essay-writing process. Though the TOK Essay will be written in your second year of the program, t we will produce several practice essays in the interim. The TOK Essay counts as 67% of your overall IB Grade for the course.
