Old Google Forms use to be kind of clunky for this purpose, but their new update is now perfectly set up to create a test or quiz, and it can automatically grade most items for you too! (It can't grade text/paragraph entries)
To get started, type in all of your questions, selecting the most appropriate answer type for each question. When you want to turn it into a quiz, go to the settings menu (gear icon)
1. Flip the switch at the top to "Make this a quiz"
2. Choose all of the settings for your students, such as whether they immediately get their grade (if all are multiple choice or drop down or checkmark, this is easy. Otherwise choose "Later")
3. Choose what they can see. Point values should probably be the only one here.
Once you have the initial set-up done, you need to go in and create your answer key. If you enable the "quiz" feature before you start typing all of your questions, you can do this as you go. After each question, there is now an "Answer Key" option.
Now, you just click that on each question, set how many points that question is worth, and select the right answer. It will highlight in green! Click here to see the teacher-facing view of a basic quiz. Click here to see the student-facing view.
Pro Tip: Make sure you go through all of your settings before you distribute this to students. Make sure they can only submit 1 response, collect their email addresses, make sure they can't edit after submission, or see the summary afterwards of their classmates' responses. Also make sure you go to the "Responses" tab and flip the switch to stop accepting responses once the time period for the test has elapsed.
As usual, the students' submissions will appear in a Google Sheet, but now it will also display a score. You can also color the cells yourself to make it easier to see which students got each question correct or incorrect. (See Google Forms for Assignments to see how to do this quickly)
