CMS's ARt Classes
By Stella Ingram
In this issue of “The Cougar Catch!”, we interviewed the students of Art and Industrial Arts to see what they're working on.
Have you ever tried making paper-mâché? Well, the students of Mr. Fosler’s art class are creating masterpieces with this technique. The process of paper-mâché involves creating a base structure out of cardboard, then adding smaller details on with paper. You then add strips of newspaper covered in a sticky concoction to make it hard.
A short walk away, in the Industrial Arts classroom, students are hard at work on their projects. Van Myrold, a student in that class, is creating a spoon and bowl.
According to Van, to make a spoon, you first have to make a blueprint. You pick a wood, draw on a design, carve it out, and cut it out on the bandsaw. Last but not least, you sand down your creation.
Another student, Brayden Anderson, is working on one of his cutting boards. You may have noticed the large display of cutting boards in the library, and these are all from the Industrial Arts class. We asked Brayden about the process of making a cutting board and he said, you have to make a blueprint first. You then pick the wood you want, place it, and glue it together. You cut the excess off, then use a planer and sand it. You then oil it, and if you want, add a design on with laser print. Brayden has so far made 3 cutting boards, 2 of them with designs of a betta fish and sunflowers.
These past couple of weeks have been very busy for these students! These paper-mâché and wood projects are the exact reason people have joined these classes. Thank you so much to all the students we interviewed, and of course, have a cougar-tastic day!
