As a Career and Technical Education program, students are encouraged to participate in a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO.) As such, our Digital Photography pathway participates in SkillsUSA.
SkillsUSA is a professional organization that is designed to be run by students, for their own growth and benefit. SkillsUSA members develop into well-rounded people with technical, academic and employability skills that will help them get a job and have a successful career. Through chapter meetings, contests, leadership conferences and activities, students will be building these skills. Each chapter chooses, plans and conducts its own activities. Our Chapter is operated through our Capstone course, Digital Photography 2. Students enrolled in this course are automatically assigned a paid membership.
The SkillsUSA Championships are competitive events showcasing the best career and technical education students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. The philosophy of the Championships is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employers’ needs.
Competitors are put through a series of real-world photographic scenarios and are judged on their overall mastery of the following skills: understanding the features of today's digital SLR or mirrorless cameras, field photography assignment, producing a contact sheet, producing a composited digital fine art piece from their field assignment, 50 question written test, portrait/commercial studio using strobes, troubleshooting common photo errors, print competition, resume submission and job interview.
Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals are awarded to the top 3 competitors in each event in each region. The top 5 competitors qualify to compete in their event at the State Leadership and Skill Conference against students from the other 5 regions throughout the State.
In our third year of participating in the regional competition, one of our Bobcats medaled, qualifying them to participate at the state level competition, where they earned a gold medal (pictured, at right) and were invited to compete at the National competition in Atlanta, GA.
