Experiment with the marks that can be made with different drawing instruments on a range of surfaces.

• use different lines: short, long, straight, crooked, light, dark, heavy, crooked, wobbly, zigzag
• use different media: markers, crayons, wax, pencils, charcoal, chalk, pastels, etc.
• use different surfaces: paper, card, cardboard, sugar paper, different coloured papers, plastic, fabric, etc.

• Use wax crayons to make a drawing about the most exciting place you have ever visited
• Look at an insect through a magnifying glass. Talk about the shapes and lines you can see and draw a picture about what you saw using pencils
• Listen to a story such as Jack and the Beanstalk. Imagine what the land of the giant might look like and draw a picture of this using coloured pencils or markers
• Make a drawing of yourself snuggled up in your bed – can you show all your favourite things that you have around you in your bedroom in your drawing?
• Make a drawing of your back garden.
• Take two favourite story characters, from different stories, and draw a picture about them meeting for the first time. What do you think they might say to each other?
